I think postponement of interviews means almost nothing. Einstein most likely cleared out the rest of their list and rejected all because they dont foresee being able to interview in the next few weeks as they claimed (thru end of April). Most schools are trying to avoid all contact for next 3-4 weeks and that eliminates interviewing opportunities.
Hi! I am a senior who has already been accepted into medical school, but I have a friend who is 1 year below me that I really care about, and want to give advice to, but I’m not sure what the best path is for him. He chose to P/F Organic Chemistry 1 getting a P during his sophomore fall because he was dealing with a difficult family issue. I think he did not realize at that time the impact of that decision. However, he went on to get an A in Organic Chemistry II, A- in Biochemistry and become a Teaching Assistant for that class, as well as get As in Physics I and Physics II. HIs general BIology and Chemistry course grades were B+, A-, or As. Other than this P on his transcript for Organic Chemistry I, the only class he did not so amazing in, was Calculus I which he got a C+ in.
What should I advise him about the Organic Chemistry I? Will it be fine, because of the rest of his grades? Should he retake the class? If he tries to appeal to the Dean, and it doesn’t work out, does that mean his medical school chances (MD or DO) or even dental school chances are completely gone?
Thank you so much.
@kybron
Med (MD and DO) schools and dental schools require actual letter or numerical grades for all required pre-req classes. A P/F class does not fulfilled admission requirements and will treated as if your friend had never taken the class at all.
Since OChem 1 is a hard requirement at most med schools, he needs to retake the class (and lab) for a grade.
Appealing to the Dean won’t help because this is not something the Dean has leeway to allow. (The LCME does audits of student records to see if students are being accepted according to the school’s own admissions rules. A med school can lose its accreditation over something like giving one student an exception.)
His chances aren’t gone. He just needs to re-take Ochem 1 for a grade.
He needs one year of organic chemistry (6 semester hours + 2 lab hours). He can take another organic chemistry class or repeat it for a grade. I don’t know if med schools consider P/F as a C and move on.
@WayOutWestMom I am not sure how the nuances work. I believe you have to submit your withdrawals to the schools since most people would have accepted directly. AMCAS has a radio button saying plan to enroll or commit to enroll which means you can only do one on AMCAS.
So they must be comparing your AMCAS choice to what you have told them directly?
As of today, every student can have only 1 PTE school on AMCAS. Prior to today, student could PTE at up to 3 schools. And prior to April 15 a student could PTE at every school at which they had received an acceptance.
Student are strongly advised to send individual communications to school that they wish to withdraw from, but they are not obligated to do so. Each school can see which students have selected PTE on AMCAS for that specific school. Any student who previously held an acceptance but didn’t click the PTE button on AMCAS by today has had their admission automatically withdrawn.
