2019 Fulbright Summer Institute

they’re really taking their sweet time…

Last year I saw that some didn’t hear til like the 6th of April. So I’m just trying to be patient and wait it out. If it doesn’t work out this year, there’s always next year.

My daughter received an email on March 27th… inviting her to interview this Thursday, the 4th of April. But it may be rolling out program by program. She had applied to the University of Birmingham’s summer institute for film and media. Good luck to all those still waiting… and to those who have interviews scheduled.

Anyone else apply to the same program?

Ah good luck to your daughter!! Still waiting on Glasgow here.

@ddolphinsrocck8 Thanks. Hopefully they respond with good news and soon for you…

Still waiting on Glasgow as well! Based on last years notifications, I am predicting that they will email about interviews on Friday morning

My son applied to the Aberystwyth program. Still waiting to hear…

I just heard. Didn’t get an interview. Applied for Queens.

Same

If you are offered an interview… here are some suggestions from those who went through the interview process and were selected thereafter:

  1. Do your research. Read the website. This will help you better understand the program along with the perspective of the interviewers. 2) Know the purpose, mission, goals of both Fulbright US-UK and of the specific program you applied to. Know them and then be able to prove how you going on this exchange will help fulfill their goals and yours. 3) Emphasize the role of being an ambassador. The program considers it participants to be ambassadors. You will be expected to represent the United States while you are abroad AND you will be expected to represent the Fulbright program when you come back. Be able to answer how you will be able to/plan to fulfill this role. 4) Why? One of the most common questions… Formulate a good response to why you decided to apply to Fulbright and your specific program. 5) Review your written responses. Review and think of ways you can possibly elaborate. Don’t just repeat what you wrote; if there is something you think is important to you as an applicant, bring it up. 6) Always have at least one question for them besides “When should I expect to hear back?” An example would be “What’s your favorite thing about ? “

Good luck…

Has anyone heard back from Glasgow?

My daughter just finished her interview for the University of Birmingham (Film and Media) Summer Institute. So now another waiting period begins. But it does seem like each program operates with a slightly different timetable. Good luck to others still waiting…

@arthur366 no I haven’t heard from Glasgow yet, I’m expecting to hear tomorrow morning.

@WWWard thanks so much for sharing that advice! I’m sure it will help anyone here who ends up interviewing  I hope your daughter’s went well and best of luck to everyone else!

@ddolphinsrocck8 You’re welcome. She said that she wasn’t sure about how well it went… but then again she has said basically the same thing her whole life thus far about every test, essay, interview, etc. I will update here when she learns the final decision. Last year, only 59 were recipients in total to 9 different programs, and only 6 got in for her specific program… so it is certainly highly competitive. But here’s hoping…

Given an interview for Glasgow!

@bsmithsonian congrats… and good luck with it.

I wonder how many are actually being interviewed. Is it a # equal to or close to the max of 90… or 10 per program? Or is it possibly closer to double the # of possible spots? With each interview running around 30 minutes, that seems like a lot of interviews to conduct though… especially with one interviewer apparently involved in each one. A girl who was awarded a spot last year from my daughter’s same school said that she thought the # was very close to the max possible for each program… like maybe they are only interviewing ten to twelve. In her case, she ended up being one of only six to get the offer eventually. Some programs last year only took the minimum of three. I guess though that there is no way to really know for sure in terms of the # who applied in total or the # who made the long list or the # who made the short list to be interviewed.

For those interested… here is a link to last year’s info on the recipients (their bios/details) and the #s per program, etc.

@WWWard has your daughter heard back yet?

@arthur366 Not yet. The website’s timeline says by late April. Somewhere else, maybe in an email, it said within seven working days. In her case, that would mean by the 15th… or in three days. We are still anxiously waiting  But I will post the result either way.

As an update… my daughter received her notification today via email that she was awarded a place as a Fulbright UK Summer Institute Scholarship recipient. She will be attending the Film and Media program at the University of Birmingham in England this summer. She is of course very excited. It is a great opportunity for her to expand on her current film studies at USC.

Good luck to all those still waiting…
