Is anyone familiar with the Fulbright Summer Institute process? My daughter thinks she heard that there is an additional review between “shortlist” and “interview.” thank you!
I was wondering that too. After looking at the post from other years, it seems like the “short list” was announced later in March or early April, and it meant the student got an interview. This time, the “short list” students weren’t asked to interview. I’m wondering if they changed the process this year? I wish the email discussed the next stage of the process besides just saying they’ll hear at the end of next month or early April.
The shortlisting emails that went out today are from the results of the U.S. Fulbright committee reviewers. Applications undergo another reviewing process by the staff of the Fulbright Institute you applied for - those are the results that determine if you are invited to interview at the end of March!
@hiddenabyss Thanks! How do you know this information?
Here’s an example for the summer process:

Part of the Fulbright is all about both the sending and receiving countries having a stake in decisions.
@lookingforward Right, but that link you included shows a different process than this year because the short listed candidates are invited to interview. This year it looks like there is an extra step. Or maybe, this year, it just SEEMS like there is an extra-step because they got notified before the interview selection. Doesn’t really matter - what will be, will be. I was just curious about the process, particularly after the OP posted.
@desie1 I know a few people who got accepted for the program in years past, plus I’m applying for one this year and my advisor that’s helped me prepare knows from past applicants! I’m not sure if it specifically states it online though
@Desie1, if you know how the process is different now, maybe share that. My link says, “March/April: Shortlisted candidates invited to interview.” It’s only March 1, today.
I do know the F committees can adapt or change and info is often slow to arrive. Roll-your-eyes slow. Been there with a couple of family members.
There’s a lot of speculation on the applicant forums (mostly post grad.) Info comes when it comes.
@lookingforward I think the reason they made the post is because the first shortlisting emails went out yesterday! That was for the first round of shortlisting by the US F committee
Hi all,
I too received an e-mail on Wednesday at 7:18 AM informing me that my application “has been selected as one that will move to the next stage of review” (i.e., shortlisted!). I practically jumped out of my seat. Anyway, I sent an e-mail to my scholarships advisor to ask about interview coaching and they told me what some other people have said previously: there is another stage of review between you being shortlisted and being selected for an interview.
So I guess some candidates can be shortlisted but ultimately not selected for an interview? I’m a little confused by this and am wondering if anyone has some insight. I know that in previous years being shortlisted = being selected for an interview but perhaps this is not the case this year? I am somewhat reluctant to believe it because even the fulbright.org.uk says that “shortlisted candidates will be invited to interview in April.” I am also hesitant to believe that they would make a mistake. Regardless I am very hopeful about my chances with Aber and do think most shortlisted candidates will be invited to interview – I have no authority to say that though.
Cheers and good luck to everyone shortlisted!
congrats to all who are in process…and good luck! curious what universities you are studying at? My daughter is a freshman at Notre Dame.
I’m a freshman at Syracuse.
@Scholar1917 Hi! I also applied for a Fulbright Institute this summer and I also received the same email you did. Maybe this year they had a larger number of applications or maybe the first “shortlisting” was to get rid of those people who did not complete their application requirements.
has anyone heard yet besides the shortlist email from early march?
Nothing yet…
same
no news yet…
Me neither… hopefully sometime this week or next!
Hello everyone, I received an email earlier this morning inviting me to interview with the Fulbright Commission next week. I am very excited and wanted to wish everyone good luck on their interviews!
congrats! that is amazing! my daughter just told me that she heard the emails were coming today. none for us yet.
