Thanks!
Hey guys. Current member of class of 2018 here. I will answer questions you may have about the application, requirements, student life, etc. Good luck
Hey guys, my first quarter grades have come in! If you want to chance me with my current grades as well as my others, you can check my account out.
Honors Spanish II- 99.32
Honors Chemistry-99.48
AP World History- 100
AP Calculus-98.47
Honors French II- 99.23
Honors English II- 97.48 :(((
I’m taking the SAT on Saturday, and AP World is the hardest class because our teacher is extremely hard and a college prof. I was one of only 3 ppl to get a 100 in the class.
GPA: 4.9+4.9+6.0+5.8+4.9+4.7=31.2/6=5.2 GPA
@neurofuture From what I have seen of NCSSM students to date, there are some kids from Wake County or other large high schools that are more accelerated in some of the math/science classes than the incoming students from smaller high schools or counties. Do the students from the smaller areas ever have a chance to catch up to those kids?
For instance, there are some kids who compete in various math/science contests and are already very accomplished as ninth graders, whereas some of the kids in tenth grade are on a very normal track for their high school yet several years behind when compared. How does that work on a day-to-day basis?
Thanks for being willing to comment.
Sorry to post another “chance me” But i am seriously worried about my lack of Calc

I’m in CD 13. I guess I’m not so worried as far as grades, but what does NCSSM look for when they browse over our awards, achievements, and basically leadership experience?
. I already have a couple of my own ideas for the application we have to submit online. I want to get my current teacher in English to do the English teacher evaluations. I’ll be introducing myself soon to my IB counselor for I am on the Pre-IB course. I’ll also get my current math teacher to do his (maybe) and depending on my instincts, I might get my biology teacher to do it too! I have 5 honors courses right now (because of French and P.E). My courses are pretty above level: 1.) Honors Civics and Economics (96) 2.) Honors Band (99) 3.) Honors Biology (95) 4.) Health/Phys. Ed (98) 5.) Honors Math 2 (100) 6.) French AB Initio A (97) 7.) Honors English 1 (100)
. My extracurriculars are average in my opinion: 1.) Marching Band *currently in 2.) French Club *currently in 3.) Mathletes *going to first club meeting next week 4.) Food Pantry Club *literally doing nothing 5.) Battle of the Books *currently in 6.) Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) *currently in 7.) Greensboro Youth Council *will join soon 8.) Grimsley Ladies Achieving More (GLAM) *currently in
.This summer, I’ll be doing an online course (Honors Environmental Science). Next school year, I’ll take AP World, Honors Band, Honors Chemistry, French AB Initio B, a business class, Honors English 2, and Honors Math 3. I might go for the student council too.
. After messing up in Band today and also during the game, I feel like I have the duty to remain in this course so please don’t tell me I have to quit for a “second science”. I’m going as far as taking a summer course!
. I’ll try to somehow find a way to get noticed for awards and achievements in my school (I’ll talk to my counselor about this). But please give me some advice!
. I’m using Khan Academy and the most recommended SAT prep books right now so if you have any advice for this then that would really help because no matter how much I do, I don’t feel ready! I’m taking the SAT exactly one year and two days from now.
. Any help from former student council members would help with what I said earlier about applying for student council! (*Also, I’m applying to the student council in my CURRENT school)
. Please please please give me ANY tips!
More Questions: 1.) What is the competition I have in CD 13?
2.) What is the best way to get my teachers impressed?
No idea if true or not but my wife was recently told that a kid who was admitted last year went to school and was boasting that she fabricated her ECs. Apparently someone sent a letter to NCSSM and indicated this was what happened. As the story goes, NCSSM replied to the letter indicating that they would not rescind the offer for this student to attend. Not sure this info is actionable but hopefully if more people lie about their ECs NCSSM will be forced to do a better job in the future or give no weight to ECs…
Hi,
I had a really quick question about the SSM application. On the part where it talks about EC’s, do we need to list the EC with what grade (7th, 8th, 9th, or 10th) we participated in that EC or do you think its better to just list the EC without the grade?
Do you guys think it would be better to simply list EC’s or actually write about them and what you do in them?
@spacebunsweetie I think its better to write about it , so you can show your dedication and level of involvment
@yearstogo What high school was this student from?
Hello, I am applying to NCSSM this year as well and I am in CD 7 (Goldsboro…Wayne County). I’m not quite sure about the competition in this region but out of my school, only a total of 2 people have been accepted in the past 5 years. Do you think I might even have a chance?
I attend an early college school (where I take college and high school classes at the same time and needed to apply to get in). My score does not have sports and I am not allowed t make clubs until I am a junior and senior. The college classes do letter grades and so on my transcript, it is automatically transferred as a 95 for “A”, and 85 for “B”, a 75 for “C” and everything else under is not counted as a credit. My teachers say I shouldn’t take AP classes because of the college classes. I have received all "A"s in all my classes including my college classes (all 95 and up). I have a 4.0 unweighted and a 4.5 weighted (perfect GPA from all the classes so far). I am ranked 1 in my grade. Also, for my freshman and sophomore year, I am not allowed to choose my classes.
I just took the SAT in November and the scores will be coming out on November 29. I just took the pre-ACT and will be expecting those scores in December.
For extracurriculars…I’m in Math club (going to compete this spring), secretary in Multicultural club, Visual Arts club (club got cancelled because the advisor retired) and in SAVVY. I have a total of about 60 hours in volunteering. I had volunteered in the local library, attended a cooperative camp, and going to tutor in an elementary school. I am really busy after school because right after school I have to go work at a family restaurant (Monday thru Saturday 11am-11pm) and do not have people to take me to places. In middle school, I was in National Junior Honor Society, and was in Battle of the Book and got 3rd in state level. I got 1st place in a quizbowl where I am suppose to memorize 700 questions and answers.

I wish you all luck. But don’t take all my luck… I am going to need most of it.
How does sending the SAT scores work. Did you all send it online or at the actual test. If we send it online, what happens if we don’t submit within the 9 days allotted for free submissions?
@collegegirl79 You are supposed to send the SAT scores online. Did you take it in November? After the scores come out, it allows you to send the scores then.
@robotics2001 Are you applying for residential or online?
@oralsurgery01 Are YOU applying residential or online?
@pineapplepen Im applying to residential
I’m applying to residential and online and I live in CD3. I’m just nervous because I am kind of low on extracurriculars and awards, but who knows…maybe I have a shot at getting in still.
