I am lowkey panic-ing that I might not be accepted after getting a 92 as an average on civics. Do you people think that I might still have a chance?
@pineapplepen You still do, around where I live they accept students with a’s and b’s. I even knew a student that got in with c’s. I think they look at who you are, not just the grades and scores you get.
I’m reposting this since it got lost a few pages ago to see if you guys think I stand a chance.
I am curious as to whether everyone on this topic thinks I stand a chance. I’m a sophomore from CD 8 and I attend Union Pines High School. I am involved in Cyber Patriot, FTC Robotics and Science Olympiad. I also volunteered for my school’s mock election earlier this year. We had a Relay for Life team that I helped with, but it lost its funding and was closed. Outside of school, I attend a youth group weekly and I am a Life Scout in Boy Scouts. I’m working on getting my Eagle rank and Supernova Award, although I will have neither by the application deadline. I ahev maintained an A average in all of my courses since starting high school, which are listed below:
8th Grade
- Earth & Environmental Science
- Math I
9th Grade
- AP Biology
- Honors Biology
- AP World History
- Math II Honors
- Math III Honors
- English I Honors
- Health/PE
10th Grade
- Honors Pre-Calculus (summer between 9th and 10th)
- AP Chemistry (year-long)
- Honors Chemistry
- AP Calculus AB (year-long)
- English II Honors
- Civics & Economics Honors
- Latin I
- AP Calculus BC (planned for next semester)
- Principles of Technology I Honors (planned for next semester)
I have already taken the SAT and I got a 1420, with 680 for Reading Comprehension and Grammar and 740 for Math. I have a 4.0 unweighted GPA and a 4.5625 weighted, although I will be at 4.5 at the end of the semester due to the fact that AP classes are averaged in at the end of the second semester. I am currently ranked 1 in my class, and I will be tied at the end of this semester with another applicant.
What are your thoughts? I feel pretty confident, but I am not sure how I am in comparison to other applicants.
Those grades are great! I’ve been fortunate to have mid to high A’s, but your grades are consistently in the upper range of an A. I’m sure they’ll like that when they see your final average. I think that they’ll also like how bold you are in your course selection, considering the relative ambitiousness of your courses.
Thanks tadennis007! I hope to see you at NCSSM next year. And in case I wasn’t clear, I am very well aware that my schedule wouldn’t even amount to the top 10% in areas with more resources, but hey, that seems like reason enough to apply to a school where I could use such resources.
Hey guys, do you know if we’re supposed to check “Click here if you would like to request your high school transcript be sent electronically to this college/university” when submitting the application? Because aren’t we supposed to send transcripts later in March
I just read up on NCSSM’s admissions page, and it says transcripts will be submitted from March 1st to 15th. Then, it goes into detail on how to do so.
@IsThisPoetry everything you wrote sounds great! In your application, you could add the fact that your school doesn’t have enough math courses (As a reason why you need to be at ncssm) if you want.
@tadennis007 I think you definitely stand a chance. Your GPA and SAT look great. Also, your extracurriculars look really good.
@purplejuice Thanks! That’s precisely what I did!
@IsThisPoetry I am looking forward to seeing you there too! When it comes to your schedule, what matters is that you’ve gone beyond the resources that your school can provide. That shows that you really need NCSSM.
@purplejuice Thank you! I am hoping that my essays and extracurriculars can separate me from my classmates that are also applying. I’m not in a competitive district, but my school is fairly competitive. Our counselors said that our school has a 50% acceptance rate, but we’ve also never had so many students apply in a year.
I’m applying from Enloe High School, and have seen the name mentioned a few times on other NCSSM forums, too. Does Enloe have some sort of rep amongst the pool of applicants?
Enloe does have a reputation as they have tons and tons of applicants and send the most people from any school to NCSSM- I think. They have like 30 seniors and 10 juniors. One of my friends is from Enloe and he said one of the #1-5s got rejected i think so Enloe admissions is very competitive (due to # of applicants) and random
Before we submit the application there is a spot asking if we would like to request our high school transcript be sent electronically?
I thought we request transcripts in March? What happens if we don’t check the box? Does that mean we can’t send our transcript?
@collegegirl79 That means you have to mail it to them if you check no- You still send transcripts in March
I would really appreciate advice from anyone if possible!
I really want to get into this school but I don’t think I stand a chance… I live in CD 13 which is known for being competitive and I don’t go to a magnet school or anything like that.
I’m taking honors PreCalculus and AP statistics sophomore year (current) and I took math 3 honors last year. I’m also taking honors chemistry right now and last year I took honors biology. The only science club I’m a part of is Science Olympiad, and I just joined this year. Our first competition isn’t even until after the applications are due, so I can’t put anything down in achievements for that. I’m not on the board of anything (like I’m not the president of vp or whatever of any club) and I heard most people who get in take Calc their sophomore year, which I haven’t done. I’ve won a few national awards for singing but they were with my whole choir, which was an advanced group I auditioned for at my school. I’ve done a lot of volunteer service and have been in key club for two years, as well as CTC. As of right now I have about 160 hours of community service and I recently started a project to donate books to a poor school in a foreign country. It’s still a work in progress however so it hasn’t gone very far off the ground. I have had straight As all my life and by the end of freshman year I was in the top 5% of my class. But overall I don’t have many awards or great achievements, or leadership positions, and it worries me that I haven’t taken AP calculus yet. Also my SAT score is okay, it’s equivalent to about a 2040 on the old SAT so I don’t have much leverage there. I’m worried they won’t accept me because of it. I did write on my application however that my older sister attended the school a few years back, but I doubt that it matters much.
Please give me some advice if you can!!

I’m really nervous because a lot of people are applying from my school. What are my chances?
@stressmonkey Not taking AP Calc isn’t a big deal; the information you have is pretty false- as a Junior, I would say that 20-25% of people have taken Calc before NCSSM; and 60 more % have taken precalc
does anyone know if CD12 is competitive? (or how competitive)
