2024 *Waitlist* UChicago RD

Hey guys congrats to everyone has been accepted so far, and good luck to those who are waiting!
I’m probably getting anxious for no reason, but my regional admissions officer called me yesterday and said I was off the waitlist, and that he would be sending me a confirmation kind of email following the call. I know it’s only been a little over a full day since then, but I heard a lot of people got officially accepted the day of the call. Should I be concerned?

@pogilicious Congratulations.

First of all, check the spam file in your email. Maybe the formal confirmation email was accidentally sent there.

Second, if you still haven’t found the email, call your regional admission officer at a reasonable hour on Saturday to inquire about the missing email. Be polite and I am quite sure the regional admission officer will understand your anxiety.

@85bears46
Thank you so much for your response!

I’ve been checking my entire email account, but I haven’t seen anything thus far.

I’ll see if I get anything tomorrow morning before I send a message. Do you think it would be better to call than email? Only asking because I don’t want to seem like I’m “bothering” my admissions officer.

@pogilicious congrats!! could you please let me know if you’re domestic or international?

@milhojas thank you! I’m domestic :slight_smile:

I think domestic should have a better change on the waitlist especially if US embassies don’t open up. Keep in mind it also depends if the I-20 paper can be sent to you right now. Also, a lot of countries have cancelled their national exams and/or will delay graduation for students until December.

@pogilicious - congratulations for the phone call for offer of admission! I’d try to be patient and wait until Monday (business day) since the offer is likely from the server from UChicago rather than directly from your RAO.

@Waitlistedparent
Thank you!!
I guess that may be a better idea. I need to be more patient haha

@pogilicious If you don’t want to bother your regional admission officer too much over the weekend, then email him in the morning. Again be polite and just request him to send the confirmation email again. And make sure he has your correct email address.

The decision to call you off the WL was made by the Admission Office and not your regional admission officer. Nonetheless, it will be wise not to get on his nerve too much. Yet if he doesn’t respond by Monday early afternoon, then call him.

Completely agree! My son was offered a spot off the waitlist on a Thursday by the AO with email confirmation the following Tues. and the portal updated Wed. Consider yourself accepted and wait patiently :slight_smile:

@need2knowtimes3 @85bears46
Okay, thank you. I really appreciate it!

Out of transparency, my daughter did NOT apply to UChicago, but is wait listed at a T20 school. Just curious as to why UChicago can already be admitting students from the wait list if students do not need to decide until May 1st? Any thoughts?

No inside information on the process. But, if students have made decisions ahead of the May 1 deadline and have already notified the school, it is possible the actual yield - this year in particular and in light of the large international population at Uchicago and Covid 19 considerations - may be below expectations making it possible to admit from the waitlist.

@ obmom - I know you know this but let me say that colleges offer admission to more students than the size of their Freshman class. They can do this because of yield, which is the the ratio of students that matriculate over those offered admission. Colleges hedge by offering Waitlist status to make up the deficit for the Freshman class. With the advent of Common App and Coalition App, many students apply to a wide range of schools (Stretch, Match & Safety) and once a student decides on a school (Elite Schools such as UChicago typically announce by late March, perhaps as late as April 1), he/she can decline colleges he/she has no intention of attending. I suspect that UChicago has heard back from enough admitted students to know that there is a shortfall and have decided to pull from the W/L. I read in CC that in the past, this started after mid April and this year, it started in late March. I also read from the admissions office blog that in the past, they pulled from zero to a few dozen from the W/L. Anyway, we’re holding a seat at our D’s backup college but she may or may not attend depending on the outcome of the W/L. Best if luck at your D’s T20.

Did most people send the LOCI to their regional AO or the general AO? And who should we address the LOCI to?

UChicago admitted off the w/l prior to May 1 last year and I think the year before too. But usually around Mid April. This year is earlier than usual.

@JBStillFlying @CUandUCmom @Waitlistedparent

Thank you for your responses. UChicago’s yield must be very high if they can start taking from the waitlist early. I was hoping that perhaps it was unusual for them this year, and may therefore apply to the other T20 schools. (i.e. my D would perhaps hear prior to May from the waitlist)
Good luck to everyone who is waiting to hear from waitlists.

^ UChicago’s yield was a bit over 80% last year. This year who knows what is happening. The last few weeks have been unprecedented for college admissions and pretty much everything else. Best guess is that they are starting earlier because they will be taking more off the waitlist than usual . . . but no one really knows one way or the other.

Given that schools are starting to delay Decision Day, it’s also possible that all of this uncertainty will be pushed out another few weeks.

I just got a call from my AO asking if I was still interested in UChicago. I said yes, it was one of my top choices and I would definitely consider it if I were to get in. Is this a good sign??

@lycheejellys - is UChicago really your top choice?
