Ivies and other elite schools care more about the applicant as a person than his or her stats. Want an example?

My brother:

3.8 UW GPA

3 AP classes (Physics 4, BC Calculus 5, Computer Science 5), no Honors classes

Community service: ~50 hours for NHS

No EC's except Aerospace Club (two years), NHS, and he started working for a pilot's license at age 15

No leadership positions

29 ACT

Didn't take SAT or subject tests

He got accepted at MIT, School of Mines, and CU Boulder with scholarships.

Maybe it was a random decision, but I'd like to think that his acceptance at MIT was because of his essay, which was all about his passion for aeronautics and engineering.

Stop worrying about looking impressive and BE YOURSELF. You can't put on a show for your entire life.

This person that you know probably did not portray himself well enough in the essays, or maybe the EC's had nothing to do with his passion. I can't be sure, of course, but with those great stats, that was probably the problem.

Wow, kudos. It's so hard to get into HYP. Lots of people who "should" get in, don't. And especially since there are SO many applicants, I guess you really have to sell yourself well with your application. But considering his grades and scores and all that, it's clear that he's an intelligent guy and will most likely find some form of success, be it in Harvard or Yale or wherever

Haha I agree. Friend had a 2400, 6 SAT ii' 800s (<<< Amazing, no?), but he didn't have quite as many outstanding ECs so I've heard. Anyway, he was rejected from HYPS and ended up going to a good liberal arts school back in his his homestate of N. Carolina.

But yeah after hearing so many people here on CC being like...multi-year Intel Semifinalist/finalists, I doubt all of them will get into HYPSM.
