2nd Best Christmas Present: Financial Aid!

^^^^ It got a lot more complicated and interesting than that. It became and argument over whether need based aid should take into account charity. You would understand why it is 8 pages long if you read through it…

But since I have nothing better to do for the next 5 minutes and I quite enjoyed the discussion here I shall respond to your pretty childish post: (If you read the thread you will see that I like lists, so)

1) OP’s parents donate 15, not 30% Did you even read the OP?
2) “And its not like any god is going to come down to smite you and your family if you donate 10% instead of 30%.” Seriously? no, wait, SERIOUSLY! The tone man, so insensitive, unthinking. Obviously OP does not think bolts from the sky etc - personal choice…
3) Why the hell would the aid be for one year?
4) Do you know OP’s position? Do you know where they live? what is happening, how many other children? So how can you assume that they can live off 80 000.

And this is coming from someone who argued vehemently against OP’s point, that is how much your post annoyed me.

Read the thread

Get the facts right

Think

And then post

Sigh

Edit: Had to add more arrows up cos people posted in between…

Thanks idiosyncrasy I was just getting lame and falling into a pity party. yay! Someone doesn’t hate me lol

Btw my situation:
2 kids in college next year
I have 3 half siblings in Costa Rica who are poor and 3 in NYC who are rich. I understand both sides of the spectrum.
Higher than normal medical bills-I have a minor disability.
High cost of living in my area; parents want to move to smaller house but can’t sell ours
I don’t know if we could live off that…if we could sell the house maybe…good thing about the disability is that I can’t drive so we have 8 grand I would have spent on a car that can go to college…thinking about trying to sell some possessions too

Hey! Maybe we can salvage this thread…want to brainstorm creative ways to make money? Could help other people…

Egg/sperm donation :)

sell a kidney lol I’m almost that desperate

sell car/other possessions will no longer need in college

Actually, I have a better idea. I’ll start a new thread :)

The reason why this thread has been going on for so long isn’t because people didn’t know about your unique circumstances… It comes from the fact that you are blatantly ignoring that laying off the 15% donation part of your family income for 4 years (not for all eternity), may be your only option of attending your dream school. AND if your parents truly know how much this means to you, and if they are really as caring and giving as you describe them, they should have the logic to figure out that this is best thing for their own DAUGHTER.

You can’t save the whole world with a $200,000 income but you can start by giving your child an opportunity of achieving something great.

I’m happy now…channeling stress into brainstorming  I’m sorry you don’t understand our lifestyle, but it’s OK. Feel free to help brainstorm in my new thread!

I have a pretty good idea. Instead of selling all your stuff, why dont you just STOP DONATING TO CHARITY?!!?!

Or stop donating money to charity and instead donate your goods to charity. Especially since youre going to college, it would be a pretty decent idea to give all of your material posessions ( that you dont need, of course ) to goodwill or some stuff like that.

You know your parents are crazy if theyd rather you desperately beg for advice on how to cough up 50k a year than stop donating to charity.

I’m not going to change your mind, and that’s OK. I’m finished with this thread, but if you would post some money-earning ideas on my new thread, I would be very appreciative.

Yeah seriously, now it’s just getting kinda sad, just leave her alone, she obviously has a VERY unique way of living that cannot be undone by an argument on CC, lol…

Unique? More like irrational, dogmatic, and impractical.

I can’t believe this thread filled up faster than the Yale SCEA results, haha

;) Yup lol

And! barring all of the “official” Yale threads on this forum, this thread is now the second most replied-to thread, second only to the (in)famous word association game thread.

Ok, I’m going to assume your parents will absolutely not agree to stop their donations. Could you perhaps work out an arrangement where they donate less-say 5-10% of their income-while allowing you to raise money for the remaining amount while in college? That way some of your parents’ money goes towards your education, while you can continue your charitable work by working for it at Yale. You can do this by donating your possessions or devising more creative ways for raising funds. For example-in my school I’m involved in multiple charities. We do pretty simple things that are limited to our school and community, nothing too grand. However, we do it throughout the year and at frequent intervals to maximize the number of donations and money we can raise. Last year, we raised 5000 euros for one charity in a year. If you’re able to raise that much (probably much more) in college, surely it will take care of your obligations while not compromising on your ability to pay?
Hope this helps a bit, it was the only compromise I could think of since I know I will be involved community service and fundraising while in college.

lol That thread always seems to pop up so randomly… :P

^^Perhaps I could ask my parents how they’d feel about that  thanks

Actually, that brings up a good point. Perhaps at Yale you can join a service club that raises money for charities. That way God loves you AND you can go to Yale.

bvza, jeez, leave her alone man… starting to reach stalker status…

Chaospreferable, why is money the only method of donation to your family??

Also, is your family tithing or donating?? The two are very different!
