2nd Master's before PhD

Hi all,

I've been thinking about this for sometime, but would love to know what others think.

I am applying to PhD Epidemiology for Fall 2009 and am currently enrolled in a MS Epidemiology program. My current thesis is "classical epi" research--case-control study/risk assessment and I would like to continue in this line of research for PhD. However, in case I am not admitted to PhD, I would like to do a MPH in health policy (my secondary interest).

My ultimate career goal is to become a professor (cancer epidemiology area), not sure how having a second Master's degree-MPH-will reflect. For "near-term" benefits, however, if I have to apply to PhD again, the extra year will give me a chance to publish results from my current thesis work.

Any thoughts? Thanks!

Just apply to both programs (MPH and PhD Epidemiology) and see where you go from there.

If you are looking for a career in research then a MPH won't be nearly as helpful as the PhD since a MPH is based around practical experience. The MSPH degrees cover more research methodology. If I were in your position, I would be applying just for PhD with the backup plan being time as a lab tech or whatever the cognate position in epi is. Alternatively, a PhD in a related field might be advantageous if you are unable to get into the Epi PhD. Realistically though, you could just pick a wide range of schools to improve your shot at the epi PhD.
