2nd PhD....

Do many grad programs prefer that you NOT already have a PhD - even if it's in an un-related field? I want to merge knowledge of my field with a completely different discipline, but I have no knowledge of this 2nd discipline. The university I am interested in attending for my 2nd PhD .. the particular department, that is... made it clear on their website that they prefer u don't have a PhD already even in an unrelated field. though they make exceptions. what helps, however, is that this place is 1) my undergrad, and 2) where my husband wants to do his post-doc. I don't want to do a postdoc in my field. at least I think I don't.

Any advice? I'm new to this online discussion board stuff..... I just came across it thru google. thanks for reading!!!! :)

Some departments will not even accept applications from people who already have a PhD, even if it's in a different field. Some are fine with it.

You don't necessarily need a second PhD for what you want to do - you could study it on your own, attend workshops in the new field, or take a few classes as a special student.

I knew a professor in college that had two Phd's - she got a Phd in mathematics in russia, and when she and her husband moved here, she could not find a job, and so she went back to school to get her Phd in finace. She is the only person I have ever met or heard of that has two phd's.

I guess just go ahead and apply. Everyone on here will have a different opinion, so just apply and wait - the worst they can say is no.
