3.0 to 3.3 (GPA) Parents Thread (2011 HS Graduation)

recqueen…AARRRRGGGHHH…Go Pirates. I went to ECU and S2 is a jr. there this year…loves it. I’ll be glad to answer any questions of you think of anything.
Purple Reigns!

rcqueen, It sounds like your visits were very successful. It’s just great when there is a clear feeling, yes or no. But why did you deposit so early before you’ve heard from heard from the rest of her schools? Most colleges don’t allow you to double deposit and some will even rescind the acceptance if they find out about it. Was it some sort of refundable deposit?

My husband, son and I visited Drexel today for a visit to the iSchool. This is the third time I’ve visited Drexel, son has been twice and first time for his Dad. That’s not counting the yearly Robotics tournaments so we did feel a bit familiar with the campus, but it was the first time we went into the Information School where Son has been accepted. They did a great presentation. We were all surprised that there are only 50 freshman in the iSchool and their co-op students are highly sought after by employers. The co-op pay for a six month experience averages over $17,000! The only downside is that son did NOT get any merit money. There is room for appeal however, and he did apply for a Robotics scholarship. We shall see…

rscqueen, is it a refundable deposit?

One of my kids once bugged me to deposit on an “Accepted Students Day” where they would get a free T-shirt. (would get the free T-shirt if they enrolled, anyway) When I explained I had appealed FA & we had “special circumstances”, there would be no incentive for school to give child more FA if we deposited that day, my child understood that the rush to deposit would certainly cost us! Later that school gave us $4,000 more in grant money. Child did get the T-shirt about 6 weeks later.

Unless it has changed in the last two years, the $100 deposit isn’t refundable. It basically “holds your space in the class”. ECU is rolling admissions so when the class is full that’s it. Also if you pay the deposit indicating you intend to enroll, you’ll be sent housing info. in Dec. The $100 is later deducted from the dorm/housing fee.

So if a student really thinks this school is a strong contender for them, it’s prob. worth sending in the deposit.

S got his second acceptance (to Pitt) over the weekend. Not surprising he did not get into the honors program. Hoping to get some merit money but won’t know for a couple of weeks. Gotta love those rolling and EA schools.

Congrats on the acceptance to Pitt mamom! It seems to be the new popular State school for kids at my son’s HS, replacing the standard PSU love.

I had a funny experience with two other Mom’s at Drexel yesterday. About 50 or so of us were walking to the iSchool from another building and one of the Mom’s was quizzing a Drexel student who was chaperoning our group. She was saying that she didn’t think there were too many schools that offered a computer security major. Right away I said, Champlain College in Vermont does and the Mom next to me said East Stroudsburg has one and then we all three mentioned some other schools that had it as a minor or concentration, etc. Meanwhile our kids are not saying anything and the Drexel student is looking at us like, “How do these Mom’s even know about network security??”

congratulations on Pitt, mamom and S!! Cherryhillmom, I don’t know what turned out to be in that envelope–but it really made me feel for kids whose parents aren’t partners in this process-- college admissions is such an immense and complex world in this era, I don’t know how a teenager can navigate it successfully on his/her own. (Thank heaven for great GC’s!)

mamom congrats on the acceptance. The $100.00 is non refundable but we were told it wouldn’t hurt her FA and being from OSS and with the NC limits on OSS we wanted to hold her place. She is certain this is where she is going, but again the Charleston acceptance or denial letter won’t arrive until late December. if she gets accepted she might change her mind but I think she is pretty set on ECU.

kathiep-I bet those moms are also on CC!

LOL, holliesue! East Stroudsburg does not come up very much on CC, so that tip might come from somewhere else.

It was probably a PA mom thinking that East Stroudsburg was less than half the price of Drexel, although Drexel has a better reputation, internships and access to Philly

I’m only a HS junior but I’ve begun to worry about college admissions already. I’m really worried that I won’t make it to any of the schools I want to go to… especially Cambridge. Cambridge and Yale have always been my dream schools.

Oh well… I’ll probably apply to every Ivy, Cambridge, and one safety plus Berkeley. I know I’ll get into at least several Ivies but whatever I’ll just go to UW because it’s the closest and cheapest and I can live at home!

My SAT is pretty bad… I don’t know if I should retake a 2310 (2330 superscore) because lots of my friends have 2370 and they’ve been pressuring me to retake until I get a 2370 :frowning: I don’t know though, but I feel bad about not scoring above 97% raw score…

I think my GPA should be fine… I’m taking all APs this year so it’ll shoot up if I can maintain my grades!

Kironide, You do realize that you are posting on the thread for parents of B students, don’t you?

A thread for parents of B students graduating in 2011…

Well I’ve certainly seen students post here occasionally!

Yes, but not ones with the arrogance to say that they “know I’ll get into at least several Ivies”. Fly over to the Ivy forum, why don’t you, where you can moan about your 2310 SAT score with someone who cares.

Oh no she di’nt!

Visited Morehouse today! Great kids and a great experience!

Hi 3.0-3.30 parents
I always wanted to post here although my dd3 is just slightly above (ok 3.45) in GPA but totally B student in ACT range. I was so relieved that she has 2 completed apps to U of Oregon and U of Denver. Plus, a few more “almost ready”. I don’t post too often but do get lots of nice tips from CC parents who don’t know they’re helping me! Sometimes I get frustrated with my DD; I am trying hard to get her to focus on the fact that come May she out. done and high school is over while she seems so proccupied with the Fall play, homecoming, speech/debate team events that she, “doesn’t have time” for college apps. Oh, i forgot try-outs for the musical. Is everyone’s kid so organized and prepared as I seem to read here? (I did tell her they “kick you out” of high school in May!

“Is everyone’s kid so organized and prepared …”

Kids OR parents; not both, sometimes neither.

I poppy! Lots of kids procrastinate because the college process and leaving home scares them.
