<p>I loved this thread topic that someone else created. ( I hope you don't mind that I copied.)</p>
<p>We're all trying to guess what schools our B students can get into. If you're willing to share the schools that your son or daughter got into and what their GPA and tests scores were that would help the rest of us out a lot.</p>
<p>S2, graduated '08
gpa… guessing around 3.1-3.3 weighted.
class rank barely in top 33%
Took 11 honors,2 AP’s, 2 dual enrollment at CC
4 yr. football player
SAT was dismal 1440/2400…took it once…was planning on CC at the time.</p>
<p>Options were limited to instate publics. Applied to Western Carolina Univ. and East Carolina Univ. SAT was below avg. for ECU but gave it shot.</p>
<p>Was admitted to Western Carolina University and East Carolina University.</p>
<p>Starts his soph. year at ECU next week.</p>
<p>D graduated in 2007 with a 3.2 gpa, no AP and one honors class, 25 ACT. She applied to 9 schools, was admitted at 8, and waitlisted at one. The schools to which she was admitted were Lewis & Clark, Willamette, Beloit, U. of the Pacific, Carthage College, Valparaiso, Wittenberg and Gustavus Adolphus; waitlisted at Knox.</p>
<p>She’s entering her junior year at Gustavus.</p>
<p>S2 graduated this year ('09) with a 3.2 weighted gpa, 1860/2400 SAT, 26 ACT, 3 APs.
He was admitted to Ohio State, Miami University, Kent State, Ohio University, John Carroll, Xavier, Marquette, Penn State (Main Campus) and Saint Louis University. Also, 7 of these schools gave him merit aid which as definitely appreciated. </p>
<p>In the brand new issue of USNWR college guide, there is a large section about A+ schools for B students that is worth looking at.</p>
<p>DD graduated with 3.2 unweighted. No AP’s, 5 honours, highest math was Honors Pre-Cal.
SAT’s 1050/1600.
Accepted at Guilford, Belmont Abbey, UNC Asheville, UNC Greensboro, UNC Charlotte, ECU and Western Carolina. Chose Belmont Abbey.
Her stats may have been a little low for Guilford, but we made a visit to the school which may have made a difference.</p>
<p>Dd graduated a couple of years back with a 3.0 unweighted, one AP, quite a few honors, SAT in the 1800s. Math was only through Alg 2. Very good extracurriculars. She got into U of Arizona and U of Indiana with merit.</p>
<p>Of course I do not mind, makes me happy that now we have a wider range to look at.</p>
<p>dd graduated in June with 3.3 unweighted GPA, a couple Honors courses but no AP. Has ADHD and has always been a terrible test taker. SAT was 1480/2400 and ACT was 22. National Honor Society and Tri-M Music Honors Society. Strong extra-curriculars ranging from first-team all-region soccer to top honors in band.</p>
<p>She was accepted at UNC-Charlotte, Lenior-Rhyne University and Catawba College. Wait-listed at Appalachian State. She just started at Catawba and has a decent scholarship. So far, she loves it!</p>
<p>Like Packmom, we have a son at ECU. He had a 3.1 high school GPA, 1500 SAT and 24 ACT. He has learning disabilities in reading comprehension and processing speed, which hurt his test taking. Accepted at East Carolina, Barry University in Florida, University of New Orleans, and Catawba College. Did not get in to UNC-Wilmington or UNC-Asheville. Chose East Carolina.</p>
<p>He’s now starting his second year at ECU, but college has been a lot harder than he expected.</p>
<p>My kids who had B+ GPA and SAT’s in the 1200-1300 range (M + CR) got into a wide variety of colleges - St. Joseph’s University ¶ , Mount St. Mary’s University, Colorado School of Mines, Temple University, Pitt, Dusquene, U of South Carolina , Stevenson U, Old Dominion U, Catholic U of America.</p>
<p>IMO, for a kid in the B+ gpa range; at many schools their SAT’s and the strength of their academic schedule can be the tipping point.</p>
<p>Similiar stats as to what we have been talking about on 3.0-3.3 Parents’ thread: schools included UVM, St. Lawrence, UCONN, Marlboro College, Hood College, Green Mountain College, Wheaton College, UNH, Wells College, Elmira College, Moravian College, Simmons College, Goucher College, Ithaca College.</p>

<p>This is a great thread. I’m surprised by the quality of some of the schools though, so I think it also might be helpful to list if your child is a URM or has another hook. Thanks!</p>

<p>It would also be helpful to know if the student applied for financial aid, in addition to hooks (ie: athlete, parent is an alum, URM, first generation to attend college, etc.). It would be useful to know whether the student visited the campuses and interviewed.</p>

Bard, BU, GWU, NYU, UMass-Amherst, UVM, Fordham, Northeastern, and Hampshire.</p>
<p>As you can see an unweighted 3.3 can get you accepted to a nice variety of schools. GPA is a funny thing. Some schools put more value into it, and some, although they may want a solid GPA, will look at the rest of the application more closely. Bottom line is most schools take everything into consideration. I imagine that if S was done in the 3.0 range he would have had less success so that 3.0-33. gap is pretty substancial.</p>
<p>Above posts mentioned financial aid. We applied for financial aid to all the schools even though we knew we wouldn’t get any. It mattered little to acceptances. Why apply? Some schools require it for merit aid consideration and rather than try to figure which to apply for and which to not, we just appled to all.</p>

<p>Letter sent with app.expressing desire to attend and mentioning many family members who have/are attending (effort to show sincere desire/intent to attend since many instate kids use it as safety/back-up).</p>
<p>Mentioned the dual enrollment program he was taking through our school system.</p>
<p>After acceptance, I noticed that his status on the univ. website said …Admitted-Dual Enrollment rather than Freshman Admit. Wondered if applying under the dual enrollment moniker…even though he only took 2 CC classes, helped him.</p>
<p>I spoke with someone (way, way) high up at Clemson yesterday. Admissions was instructed last December to accept all OOS/full pay who had a 1250+ (M CR) SAT. GPA didn’t really matter much, though I imagine they may have questioned someone with < 3.0.</p>
<p>Oh, GCMom, I forgot to mention this is 3 kids combined from over the years! I am working on my DS right now on the 3.0 to 3.3 Parents Thread. That was dumb, I left off AU & I was just there.</p>
