3.0 to 3.3 (GPA) Parents Thread (2012 HS Graduation)

OK I’ll go. Although I already posted some of this in the Class of 2013 3.0 thread to help out the next set of 3.0’s :-)

S3.
GPA 3.19UW consistent since 9th grade.

First SAT attempt in 11th grade 1350/2400
First ACT attempt in 11th grade 26 Composite
Second SAT attempt in 12th grade 1620/2400
Second ACT attempt in 12th grade 29 Composite; 30 for schools that superscored
Needless to say, we never reported his SAT scores to the colleges.
He did two 1day prep classes for SAT and ACT. Other than that, he just practiced (if you could even call it that) using ‘10 Actual SAT/ACT’ books.

AP Calculus and English; Honors Physics and Chemistry. Hasn’t done any AP exams, but might. He hasn’t made up his mind.

Leadership positions at boarding school. NOT one of the well-known northeast ones.
Varsity soccer. Mountain bike team captain; school orchestra.

EC’s consisted of usual church homeless meal program; volunteer music teacher.

Various summer jobs/spring break jobs over the high school years.

Applied to 11 schools, accepted at all 11. Only applied to 1 reach and all the rest were either matches or safety. This was intentional because financial aid was very important to us. Also most of the schools he applied to, Asians were under-reported minorities, or have a high percentage of female students. This may have figured in the colleges’ decisions.
Applied EA in most cases, which was good in that it got everything out of the way early. But as far as acceptances go, when you need money, it’s not an acceptance really, until the financial aid package comes in.

Lynchburg
Bellarmine
Ohio Wesleyan
Oglethorpe
Centre
Lake Forest
Loyola University/Maryland
Drexel
Drew
Catholic
Sewanee-University of the South

At all schools except Drexel, he received good merit money and decent institutional grants. The ‘reach’ school wonderfully, surprisingly (?) met our family’s full financial need.

I hope this helps C’13 kids.

Ok. I’ll go.

GPA: 3.0 uw, 3.5 (or 3.6)w

I got into cal poly with a 2.98!!!

Sent from my SPH-D700 using CC

My S (class of 2009~ 2.99 GPA) rejected by James Madison and Va Tech.
He went to Community College (AAS) + Disney College Program now accepted to James Madison. My D (2012) preferred to go to CC rather than go to SAIC (art portfolio accepted) she has eyes on other schools.

Neither of my kids are 4 years of university and out. I’m okay with it (now).
My niece graduated from GWU w/ loans and is a waitress, looking for work

My '12 DD had a 2120 SAT and uw 3.1 or 3.2 (her school does GPA weird) - mostly Bs with some A’s and 1 C thrown in. Will graduate with 10 APs. Accepted to all 5 schools she applied to, all with merit money:

Champlain
Endicott
Roger Williams
Quinnipiac
Bryant

She’s deciding between Bryant and Quinnipiac - both offered her honors college and their largest scholarship. We were very pleased.

Long-time lurker breaking my silence…

DD 2.44 GPA, ACT in teens (ugh!) Accepted at all 4 schools she applied to, but you’ve probably never heard of them!

She will be attending Landmark, which is a 2 year school (but is starting a 4yr degree next year) that specializes in educating students with learning disabilities. They gave excellent need-based aid. Their merit award is a seperate app and is announced in May.

^^have heard of all of them; and wonderful things about Landmark!! Good luck!

My so applied with a 2.87 GPA (now a 3.05 :)) & 1450/2050 SAT’s

accepted to: University of Pittsburgh main campus
Temple
University of South Carolina
Penn State (local campus)
no rejections!

Wow! You guys are giving me such hope. What a wonderful help these posts are. When I asked everyone to post their info, I half expected to read about 3.0 averages and near perfect SAT’s for any acceptances. Very happy to hear that a B student with an average test score still has some options. :)

Lurker from 2011/2015
D had gpa 87/100 - mostly Bs with a few As, in top 50% of very small graduating class, all honors classes (it was a special program and there were no APs). One really good EC with leadership, and decent community service and other ECs. ACT composite was 29 - one sitting (with lopsided scores between 33 and 23)

Accepted with merit:
Hampshire
LeMoyne
Siena
Manhattanville
Elmira

Accepted without merit:
SUNY Albany
SUNY New Paltz

WL:
RPI

Good luck to B students and their parents.

Also a lurker and I’m glad I found this thread last year when my son was starting the search process.

Congrats Mom on Hiram–a friend’s daughter enjoys it.

Simpkin, I am glad the ordeal is over for you and that you are feeling better about Hofstra.

Re Wait Lists, many colleges use them to make their selectivity % and their yield numbers–the percent of accepted students who attend–higher. They place many kids they would normally accept on the WL, then: (1) if the kids do not accept the WL status, which may be because they were accepted by a school they wanted more, they record the kids as rejected, which helps their selectivity % and (2) for kids on the WL, they tell them they will be offered admission only if they promise to accept, which makes their yield % higher if they accept and their selectivity % higher if they do not.

Thanks! I feel okay about Hofstra. I would feel better if I didn’t feel like he made this decision in a very lackadaisical manner!

One real advantage of Hofstra for my son is that the presidential debate this fall will take place at Hofstra, and they are doing a lot of programming around that. S requested a “cluster” of classes (three or four related classes, all taken by the same group of freshmen) based on politics and the election. He is very interested in politics, so this could be a great thing for him. Well, I am hoping for the best.

Congratulations and good luck to everyone!

That sounds like a great way for him to start college.

And his decisiveness about not considering other places should give him a sense of ownership/accountability for his decision.

It’s nice to see a great bunch of acceptances for your kids. My S13 is taking the ACT on Saturday and it’s all starting to feel very real :)

simkin: from day 1, thought he would end up at Hofstra…congratulations!!

Yes, it was love at first sight, what can you do? :)

Hi Folks,

We are just back from a spring college tour. For 2013 parents, I can share info and photos from: Earlham, Juniata, Franklin and Marshall, McDaniel and Goucher. We have also visited Guilford, SUNY New Paltz, Ursinus and Bard.

I realize most posters on this thread are done with the looking process, but I find this thread much more interesting, personal and supportive than the 2013 thread (no offense, anyone!) I and I like hanging out here. I thought posters like giat would appreciate this.

I blog about our visits. If anyone would like the url, PM me and I’ll share it.

giat13, I’m glad you posed the questions about SAT scores and GPA. My son’s SAT scores are very low, but he’s only taken the test once. Hopefully being male, an athlete and a URM will compensate for the low GPA and SAT. One can only hope!

Thanks for this thread. As I’ve said before, you give me hope! Thanks to all.

Nprmom, come over to the 2013 thread and post there…lol. I like this thread too but we need to get OUR thread active  and I’d love to hear your impression of Ursinus. My son and I are visiting later this month.

I agree with reeinaz - come on over to 2013! I follow both threads, but think it’s time for the 2013 thread to get active.
