3.0 to 3.3 (GPA) Parents Thread (2012 HS Graduation)

:) missed the wearing shorts part and here I went and thought of George Mason and McDaniel as well. Well heck if we are going out West, I would consider The University of the Redlands, simply beautiful.

Hi Everyone, Is there a thread for the Eastern 3.0 to 3.3 kid? I’ve used the search engine and didn’t come across one. Thanks.

MuppetMom, thanks for the info about Lycoming and Stevenson! We are still planning to visit Lycoming for their summer open house day. It looks like Stevenson is transitioning (or trying to) from a more pre-professional commuter college to a liberal arts college.

I’m tentatively planning a trip to the Baltimore area at the end of August. I’m interested in Goucher, Hood College, and McDaniel but I’m not sure we will visit all three. If anyone has visited (or sent a kid) to any of these and has inside information, I would love to hear it. I remain puzzled by my kid’s fixation on Baltimore (a city that he has spent less than 24 hours of his life in).

cjcmum, this thread tends to skew eastern, so a new west coast thread was started last year. I tend to read both to get a good full view.

cjcmum, this thread along with the Jewish B student thread tend to lean towards the east coast.

simpkin, I only visited Baltimore for a day and despite not being a city person really enjoyed my time there. I think if you use the search function for Goucher and McDaniel you should get some addtitional information.

I haven’t had the best luck with the search function, for these lesser-known (at least on CC) colleges. Searching by thread brings up threads that are 100s of pages long, like the Jewish B-students thread (though I just learned that you can search within a thread, so that helps), and searching by post brings up hundreds of posts listing college acceptances. Searching for Hood gets me posts about hoodies. :)

This was a thread that I started, but we never visited. It just never made it to the short list (which was a long list, lol).

Simpkin, we did visit McDaniel. It is a nice campus. My son had a problem that I think was something about an all female dorm at that time. He thought it was strange since other schools we saw did not have or discuss this. I did not love the surrounding area and that was important to me since my son would not have a car.

We never made it to Goucher, but we did tour Towson with our other son. It seemed like a nice area to go to school, but my son did not choose Towson (FA was not there for our OOS student).

Simpkin, this might be of interest to you and your son:

^^I would check with schools to see how current this information is. The brochure’s date I think is over ten years old.

northeastmom - I’ve seen all-women dorms at several campuses. I just assumed it was a combination of having some women (or their parents) prefer it and the fact that a lot of LAC’s have about 60% female students so they need more housing.

PinotNoir, we saw all-women housing at another school as well. My son thought it was strange. We also saw an older dorm at McDaniel, but there was nothing wrong with it. I think this also played a factor.

At McDaniel, the info we attended was excellent. It was a fairly large group that day, but it was done well and we learned a lot about the school. I recall taking notes!

Thanks, Proudwismom. I’ll check them out.

Joan52 - Your son should look at Roanoke College in Virginia. My older son graduated from there last year. He could wear shorts for just about the whole year, they do have a very good lacrosse team but no football. Ultimate is very popular. Lot’s of kids from mid-Atlantic states, very good merit aid for B students and an easy application. I did a review of it several years ago after our first look - [Roanoke College Visit - kathiep](http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/vibe/roanoke-college/3903370.html)

I just wanted to mention that the reason that many threads lean towards the East Coast is because 3/4’s of the colleges in the US ARE ON THE East Coast. Pennsylvania alone has more colleges then several western states combined.

^^Roanoke is a nice suggestion. This is a lovely school. One of my sons came close to attending. It has a suburban feel (in Salem), but is minutes from Roanoke, VA.

Also, see if your son is willing to travel even further south for a better chance at short weather!

We’ve seen single sex dorms for both men and women. It’s becoming less common now but still isn’t unusual.

My son has received mailings from Roanoke. It’s too far from home for him to attend but seems to be a nice school. He’d like to wear shorts year round too but it’s not going to happen!

Proudwismom - My S wants to be able to snowboard. Scranton gives credit for that. Where will he go? Where the education and final cost find the perfect balance.

Simpkin, I had to laugh when I saw that your son was fixated on Baltimore. Never heard that one before. I’m a Baltimore native and now live in between Baltimore and DC, so I’m pretty familiar with the colleges in the area.

Goucher has a beautiful campus in a nice location in walking distance to a mall and restaurants. My niece graduated a few years ago and loved the accepting atmosphere, personal attention from professors and study abroad opportunities.

McDaniel has a very pretty campus and is known for small classes and a supportive environment. It’s in a pretty rural small town about 45 minutes from Baltimore. I think that it might get boring without a car.

I don’t know much about Hood, but Frederick is very suburban.

Stevenson is working very hard to improve facilities and student life on campus. They have two campuses with shuttles running in between. The main campus is in a beautiful bucollic setting, and the second campus is in a suburban location in walking distance to restaurants. I get the impression that the students who attend were not very serious students in HS.

If you’re visiting schools in the Baltimore area, you should consider checking out Towson. It’s the most popular choice for “B” students from our HS. it’s bigger than the others, but has more academic and social choices. It’s in a fun location near Goucher, and has a very pretty campus.

Good luck with your search.

Thanks momjr! That is very helpful. I think we will plan to stay overnight in Towson, visit Goucher in the morning, take a look at Towson U, then tour McDaniel either in the afternoon or perhaps the next day. Then to Pa. to visit Susquehanna and one or two other colleges. I just can’t see touring more than a few colleges with my son unless he suddenly develops some enthusiasm for this process.

I agree with checking out Towson since you are visiting Goucher. These two Colleges that are very different from each other, but both accept B students. Since Towson is a state public, it attracts mostly Maryland residents but has an excellent location and lots of activities going on all the time so that should help keep the students there on weekends. I know two students that recently graduated from Towson and both loved it. Both students, BTW, did study abroads.

Speaking of study abroads, I think Goucher mandates that all students do one.

Bumping it up for any new posters

CJCmum, for a New Yorker it is hard to beat SUNY’s value and Binghamton might be a good fit. Granted the weather is not warm year-round, but is your son’s preference for shorts purely a warm weather preference, or is it for informal dress? At the many good PA privates, for example, I saw a lot of boys in cold weather going with shorts and sweatshirts.
