I’m an asian male and I am depressed and worried about my chances of going to a good college because of my grades. I currently have a D+ in academic chemistry with a couple weeks of school left and one last final. If I do well on the final I could bring it up to a C- but it’s not looking good for me.
Classes and grades:
Band: A
World history: A
Honors Algebra 2: B-
English 2: B-
Spanish 2: B
Chemistry:D+
Extracurriculars:
-Varsity athlete for soccer this year and will be as a junior and senior
-Club soccer
I am hoping to be scouted by colleges, but it is unlikely.
Sophomore year has been a depressing time for me. I’m most likely out of contention for UCs or any good state colleges.
Is there any hope for me for good colleges? I plan to take 1 ap and 1 honors class next year and get As in all my classes.
In a country of 3,000 colleges, there are lots and lots of “good colleges” that will accept you. It’s a matter of definition. You need to find a college that you can afford, that will accept both your grades and your SATs, that has your major, and that is a good fit for you.
You’re also apparently a sophomore; lots can happen in the next year. Hang in there, work on your grades, and try to relax.
Do everything you can to get a C-. Go talk with your teacher and ask about every possible thing you can do between today and the end of the year to make things better and show you’ve improved in understanding and achievement. If you’ve ever been distracted or uncooperative or lazy, apologize.
Are you instate for California?
I am not going to sugarcoat it, yes that D+ in Chemistry is going to hurt, particularly if you are concentrating on UC schools; but you already know that. Is the D+ the semester grade or what you think you will average for the entire year? Obviously do what you can to boost that grade. I think with continued diligence you can mitigate that D+. As others have said there are 3000 schools in the US you are definitely not out of contention for a good state college, you haven’t tanked it just yet.
If you get a D (+ or not) you will need to RETAKE that class over the summer, with exactly the same title and at exactly the same school, for UC’s/CSU’s to discount that D. A D can disqualify you from applying if it is in an A-G class (and chemistry is).
In other words, you MUST do everything your teacher requests and do it immediately.
