Hey Everyone,
I go to a private high school in RI. I do good on test and exams but
I get lazy when it comes to homework. I grew up in a tough neighborhood,
but didn't let that stop me and my parents. They worked hard to
send me to a catholic school since I was in pre-k. When I went to high school
I took french and can speak English, Spanish, a
little Portuguese, and a little French. Worked hard and got into Honors french.
Freshman year had a 2.7 GPA in reg classes.
Now I am a sophomore and am doing a little better. Now I have a 3.2 GPA and I am an honor student. Planing to have a 3.5 or higher junior year. Taking honors physics Junior year.

My best subjects are math and science except biology(got a 2.8)
My worst is literature(got a 2.7)

ECs:
Take robotic and computer programming classes. Im starting my schools first robotics club.
Worked with my dad to create a youth center for minorities to go after school for help with homework and studying.(Received recognition from the Prime Minister of Cape Verde and can get a letter of recommendation from him)
Have 40 hrs of community service.
Play varsity soccer. Captain senior year.
Play varsity tennis. Captain senior year.
Going to help a Mit alumni with some research project.

Also my mom is guatemalan and my dad is from cape verde, and both didn't graduate college. Im going to be the third person in my entire family to go to college.

I want to get into:
MIT
Caltech
Stanford
Northeastern
Berkely
Georgia tech
Harvey Mudd

Do I stand a chance into being accepted into any of these schools? Also will they take all the things I have done and gone through into consideration for my low GPA? I know I didn't do as well as I could but I am very smart and have a great passion for engineering. I m getting into a consistent habit of doing my work.

MIT, CalTech, Stanford, Berkley - High Reach, your GPA is nowhere near their desired range

Northeastern - Low Reach

GT, Harvey Mudd - No Info on.

And in all honesty, these schools are looking for diversity, but not the type of person who was raised in a bad area, and ended up doing “average” in school. It’d be different if you held a 4.0 GPA, but that is not the case. Aim for schools more like Northeastern, such as Boston University, NYU, Syracuse, Pitt.

The level of universities you are looking at are really not interested in students who are “getting into a consistent habit of doing my work”.

Great that your trying now, but there are only so many seats at top colleges and quite frankly you would likely be in over your head if your just getting the hang of it now. So start with a little less grand schools for your BA and do great work, then go on to a great grad school if your ready…

Sorry if I’m pessimistic but GPA is too low(2.7 freshman year is not the most desirable starting point for GPA, if it was 3.0 I think the chances would be higher because of the upwards trend). I agree with one post here- try Syracuse or Fordham in my opinion.

You could make a big splash for MIT with extraordinary ECs, Stunning Essays that display passion and teachers’ recs.

chance back? I sort of have a GPA prob too…

Quite frankly, Northeastern and Syracuse are rejecting 3.8 students, so I’d be sure you have more safety schools below that benchmark as well. Just to be sure you’re taken care of.

And I really don’t mean to be offensive, but hope you’ll take this as constructive criticism, it’s I do “well” on tests. Be sure your essays and letters to the school use proper grammar.
