UW GPA: 3.4
W: 3.69
SAT: 2190 (740 CR, 730 M, 720 W)
SAT II: estimating Math IIC 770, Bio 700

but my GPA is bad AND I have a D in geometry from freshman year for one semester
and I have a C- from AP Bio and am getting a C+ this semester in AP Bio as well.

I do have decent (not superb, just adequate or maybe slightly better than that) ECs.
Clubs with leadership roles, sport captain (varsity 4 yrs), and 2 internships at well known places DIRECTLY related to my future major.

My community service hours are only average or maybe less.
I do have long time commitment, but it's nothing special, just on local levels.

I am a California resident, Asian, female, and go to a public school not ranked high.

After speaking to my counselor today, she told me that I have no chance at a UC (excluding Merced, Riverside, and Santa Cruz) and it struck to me then I have no idea where I should even be applying.

Please recomment me colleges that could be reach, match, or safety for my level of student. Thank you!

somebody please reply please!!

Hey I understand your situation but don’t give up and don’t be discouraged. First of all, your SAT score is amazing. You are a junior right? So what you might want to do to balance the low GPA is to really start focusing on those EC’s. Become very involved so that when schools look at it, they say, oh yea her involvement might have been the reason why her grades were a little low. I recommend that you def. look at state colleges. Here in NJ, we have Rutgers which is an amazing State college. People from outside states actually want to go to Rutgers so badly, some don’t even get in. You have a chance at Rutgers. Just focus on EC’s like I said and maybe retake your SAT just in case you can score a bit higher. Def. take a tleast 2 subjects tests to add to your application and most of all don’t be discouraged. HS is hard we all know that, just believe that the past is the past and that you can overcome those “failures” by being better at other aspects.

Take a look at: Rutgers U, Boston U, TCNJ << very good colleges

Bye and I hope I helped even a slight bit. :)

Maybe this? [College MatchMaker - Type of School](<a href=“College Search - BigFuture | College Board”>College Search - BigFuture | College Board) Hope that helped…

Cal states are good colleges too.
Cal state long beach
Cal poly
LMU
Cal State fullerton
UCSB and UCI maybe

You can try UCSD and UC Davis. By [UC San Diego Comprehensive Review Admission Process: Freshman Selection, Fall 2010](http://www.ucsd.edu/prospective-students/admissions/undergraduate-admissions/freshmen/process.html) , it’s very possible to make up the loss of 10% in “Uncapped Grade Point Average (GPA)” in other areas thru well-prepared application package. Without trying, nobody (including your counselor) knows you could not get into UCSD and UC Davis.

Financial status is an important factor to school selection.

Actually, you have good chances for the following UCs.

Average Data for Accepted when SAT 2100-2200 GPA 3.4-3.8

UCSD 2133 3.44 3.68
UC Davis 2110 nw 3.54 w 3.77
UC Irvine 2135 3.32 3.6
UCSB 2129 3.43 3.65
UC Santa Cruz 2131 3.39 3.64

You may take a look at:
Boston Univ
San Francisco State Univ
St Mary’s Coll of CA
San Jose State Univ
Santa Clara Univ
U of Washington
USC

What is your UC GPA? You should only count a-g courses in sophomore and junior year, with a bonus point for any UC-certified honors or AP courses. That might be higher or lower than your weighted GPA.

UCs will be most concerned with your GPA and standardized test scores. You might try taking the SAT again in October of your senior year to see if you can boost your score.

How much will your family be contributing each year for your college costs, and what is your Expected Family Contribution? A list of schools for you will depend heavily on this.

THANK YOU SO MUCH!
i hope everyone sees that i replied and maybe gives me a more detailed reply??
sorry, I forgot to mention this -

I come from a middle class family and WILL NOT be applying for ANY KIND OF FINANCIAL AID.
for ANY SCHOOL. i am not even asking for scholarship, loan, or whatever. i will be paying full tuition, although I don’t know if that changes anything.

And my aim is a UC or a decent private school.
i can say i visited most CSU’s and just did NOT like it…

thank you so much for ALL the replies. it really helps me!

How much is your family actually able and willing to pay? Can you afford the cost of private colleges, which can add up to $40K-$50K per year?

If so, you have many possibilities. Selective private colleges generally apply “holistic” admission standards, not strict GPA or score cut-offs. Many of the private schools ranked 26-50 or so by US News should be realistic reach or match schools for you. The C’s and the D don’t help but are not necessarily show-stoppers, especially if your GPA has a positive trend and your essays and LORs are good.

Some small liberal arts colleges are eager to improve the diversity of their student bodies, therefore would welcome more applications from Asian students. Check out the Associated Colleges of the Midwest.

Pitzer college maybe?
University of the Pacific.
UC Santa Barbara and UC Riverside.
University of Puget Sound.
University of Oregon.
Hampshire College.
Lewis & Clark College
Austin College
St. Michaels College
Sweet Briar College
Hollins University.
St. Mary’s College (Indiana).

I will be paying full tuition wherever I go, public or private.
I can pay for the around $50K, so I have decided not to apply for any aid…
But honestly I don’t know if that makes a big difference

You would have a good shot at some top state U’s outside Cali like Washington, Wisconsin, and Minnesota.

thanks barrons - any idea on U Mich? or any of the UCs? UCs are truly my priorities.

You might, without even seeking it, be offered merit money from such colleges as U of P, Chapman University, Univ of San Diego, Loyola Marymount in L.A. Why so hung up on UCs?

You’d also get merit money at Arizona State, I think, and you would be in at Indiana University and probably Wisconsin. Michigan is more iffy, since they go on the unweighted GPA, but it could be a possibility if you apply early, ASAP, since admissions are rolling.
