Hi, I am a current senior and I am taking 4 AP courses right now.
AP Literature
AP French
AP Stat
AP Comparative Government

I want to drop my AP Lit course because it is consuming too much time so my French grade is suffering. Is it better to get 2 Bs in these classes, or drop and get straight As, if I want to be accepted at competitive universities.

I took 1 AP my sophomore year and 2 my Junior year.

Did you already take AP Lang? If you did and did well in the class (the AP score is less important, but a 4 or 5 would be ideal), then dropping AP Lit is fine. At some schools, it’s an incredible time eater, so if you already have demonstrated proficiency in an AP English class, AP Lit isn’t that important. On the other hand, two B’s is not the worst thing in the world, but your other classes might be suffering as well, so it’s your call.

I assume you have applied or will be applying shortly to colleges. When you get an acceptance, it will be conditioned on you graduating at roughly the same level of performance as you demonstrated on your application. I think one should take the hardest possible courses that one can take AND do well in. To me, the best solution is to take AP courses and get As. However, as your application is more than just these two courses (grades 9-11, SAT/ACT score, ECs, LORs, etc) I don’t think two Bs in 2 out of 4 AP courses is fatal assuming the rest of app is strong. If you can get Bs, I would stick with current schedule. Good luck.

Are other grades being affected as well? If you could get, say, an A+ in a few other classes that are just an A or A-right now, then dropping the class may help your GPA. It all comes down to how much of a benefit dropping the class will give you grade-wise. If it is just dropping your grade in those 2 classes, it may not be worth dropping the class.
