i took 2 years of language in 9th and 10th grade, but didn't in 11th grade to remain in the top 5 rank. However, I know that 3 years is recommended for colleges, so I was considering taking the 3rd year either online or at a community college (if they have it.)

Is it okay if the 3 years of language aren't consecutive?

They are usually interested in the highest level completed.

Why not just take level 3 at your high school?

Note that college foreign language courses tend to be faster paced than high school foreign language courses. Second semester college foreign language may start at about where third year of high school foreign language starts, for example. Check your high school and college for correct placement.

I can’t take level 3 at my high school because it does not fit with my schedule since it’s only offered 3rd period, but I only have space for a 6th period.

Direct answer is that no, it doesn’t matter if they are consecutive. Indirectly, however, I’d be curious as to what schools you are looking at that require 3 years. While it is true that many are requiring it, there are just as many that will be fine with 2 years of foreign language, so be sure you check out the individual schools. (Indeed, it is hard to get 3 years of foreign language in some cases due to so may AP classes and other requirements)

@stanatedj I’m looking at UC and Ivy League caliber schools. Would this conflict be something I mention in my personal statement?

For Ivy and other highly selectives, they want 3 but prefer 4, so I’d get that 3rd year in. UC only requires 2, but I’d think that for the ones that are harder to get into, the minimum may not be ideal. If you have an elective in that 3rd period, you might want to give that up so that you are not weak in the core requirements.

For the highly selective schools two years will be an issue. It probably won’t matter that they aren’t consecutive, just make sure that you get that third year in!

Also note that colleges may have foreign language graduation requirements. Having level 3 or higher in high school may let you take fewer college foreign language courses, due to being able to start at a higher level in college.

Thanks all of you guys for your help! I’ve been looking online but there’s unfortunately no online course for my 3rd year of language… Hopefully something pops up soon :)
