3 years out of HYPSM and in public service; break into IB?

Hi all,

I joined the public service (in a civilian, non-military role) after I graduated from a HYPSM with an economics major. It's been a good 3 years serving the country, but I don't feel challenged enough in my current role and, TBH, the pay could be better. I want to break into IB. Is it too late for me, being almost 3 years out of school now? Without the benefit of on-campus recruiting, would my degree name be enough to at least land me an interview if I go cold-calling?

Thanks!

You will have a better chance at IB by going back to get an MBA, unless you know someone now working at a bank. Some banks will consider those recommended by a current employee.

thanks cbreeze. I will talk to my old classmates and poke around.

Is it really hard, though, without knowing somebody? Put it another way, if I applied through the bank’s website, is there really little chance of landing an interview even with my undergrad degree? I don’t have nearly enough saved from my current job to last me 2 years at a top business school.

Recruiting at an IB, at least at the bulge bracket is very structured. They get all the first year analysts they need through campus recruiting. At times, they have a few more slots to fill during the year and they may ask their current employees for recommendations or through applications from website. I do know in several instances, that they pick through the resumes submitted by employees before they go to those submitted through other channels. That’s why networking is so important. Nevertheless, of course, do try whichever way you can.

However, there are many boutiques and smaller IBs which recruit through resumes submitted directly. With a bit of luck, your academic credentials may catch someone’s eye.

If you really want to do it, don’t delay because they may not consider you a good fit while working with mostly 22 or 23 year olds.
