31 ACT... Good enough for Georgia Tech? Chance me!!!

Hi all! I am a rising senior and will apply EA to Georgia Tech, which is my absolute #1/top choice/dream school.

Female from Illinois at pretty competitive suburban high school
Asian/Pacific Islander
Plan to major in engineering

Stats:

3.91 UW GPA

5.01 W GPA

37/1000 class rank (top 3.7%)

31 ACT (34 E, 34 M, 32 R, 25 S - 10 writing, 33 E/W combined)

32 ACT superscore (everything same except 28 science)

I have 2 more chances to take the ACT and I'm pretty sure I will get at least 32

Coursework:

Junior AP's: Spanish Lang, English Lang & Comp (don't know my scores yet but probably 3 on Spanish and 4 or 5 on English), Honors Pre-Calc (weighted as an AP class)

Senior AP's: Statistics (not AP but college course over summer but I will take the AP test), Calc AB, English Lit & Comp, Computer Science, Phsyics C, Microeconomics

My school only lets students take 1 AP sophomore year (AP Euro, which I didn't take because of little interest) and none freshman year. The average "overachiever" at my school takes 3 AP's junior year but I only had 2 so I don't know if that will weaken my chances.

Extracurriculars:

Track & Field (9, 10, 11)

Peer Tutoring (10, half of 11)

Peer Leadership (9, 11)

Business Professionals of America/BPA (11)

Relay for Life - captain of a team for 2 years, we raised $1,000+ both years (9, 10)

Volunteering at hospital - 97 hours so far (10, 11)

Volunteering at nursing home (I start this summer)

National Honor Society/NHS (11)

Mu Alpha Theta (11)

National Spanish Honor Society (10, 11)

National Spanish Exam - Silver Award

6-week paid summer internship at national science lab - worked with physicist and human resources (11)

Not official yet, but my friend and I are planning on starting a nonprofit organization where we collect and then send office supplies to developing institutions around the area

I obviously lack in leadership roles, but do I still have a reasonable chance for Georgia Tech?

Also, if anyone knows any information on how they offer financial aid then please tell me if I have a shot at any merit or need-based financial aid/scholarships! (income bracket ~ &108,000)

The other schools I am considering are (if you could also chance these that would be great but GT first and foremost!):
Purdue
Virginia Tech
Rensselaer
Iowa State
Penn State
University of Maryland College Park

If anyone could also suggest any good engineering schools that are safeties or matches for me that would be much appreciated and I will definitely chance you back! I'm not looking to apply to any really prestigious schools and the lowest I will go acceptance rate wise is 30%, but reasonable tuition is what I'm basing my options on. Thanks ahead of time!

Bumpppp

For a safety, look at University of Cincinnati. Excellent Engineering and great co-op program

@ahsmuoh thanks for the suggestion. Could you chance me for GT and the others?

And bump! Please someone chance for Georgia Tech!

Probably you will get accepted to GT. Their middle 50% ACT scores are 28 to 32, which means that 25% of entering freshmen have above a 32. With a 31 outright, 32 superscore, you have an excellent chance unless they have higher standards for out of state students (which many schools do).

However, my understanding is that out of state students rarely get much merit aid from GT.

According to the following website, U.Illinois is ranked almost as high for engineering as GT:
<a href=“Subject Ranking 2013-14: Engineering & Technology | Times Higher Education (THE)”>http://www.timeshighereducation.co.uk/world-university-rankings/2013-14/subject-ranking/subject/engineering-and-IT

Since it costs a lot less, why not go to UICU?

@NROTCgrad thanks for your input! I know UICU is a great school but I’m not applying to any in-state schools.

I am from GA, you sound pretty strong (= But expect the unexpected.Anything could happen! I wish you luck  I am trying that school myself haha

@SammyxB thanks! Yeah Georgia Tech used to be a match for me, but then I looked at this year’s freshman profile and the stats are insane. I’ve seen you post a lot on the ACT discussion, so good luck on your ACT results by the way!

Would anybody else like to chance? Pleaseeeeeeeeeee

You must be looking at old data. GT went to the common app last year, applications increased, and so did the test scores. Mid-50% for the most recent class is 30-33.

Being female and URM should help your chances, as will your strong GPA. I’d say you have a very good chance of admission.

I agree with @BobWallace‌ - you have a good shot, but it’s extremely competitive for out of state students. Make sure to apply EA for the best chance.

BC Calc is becoming more and more important to get into GA Tech. In GA a number of kids take GA Tech Calc 2 &3 their senior year after taking BC Calc their junior year by distance learning. If its your first choice school I would take BC Calc.

I don’t know how @BobWallace‌ came to the conclusion that OP is a URM, since 27% of Georgia Tech students are Asian while Asians only make up 4% of Georgia’s population. OP is clearly an overrreprsented minority when it comes to race. I assume BobWallace was only referring to OP being female, but that was a bit ambiguous.

Pacific Islander is URM at GT.

Although being female does help chances to get in GT, I have been hearing from friends and people currently in GaTech that eventually that may not help people out much as it did in the past since more and more females are attending there and it’s becoming equal in the boy to girl ratio…that’s what I was told.

@scubadive wait so if I don’t take BC Calc are my chances screwed? My teacher placed me in BC but I told him I didn’t want to take it because barely anyone at my school gets an A in that class and I know I could most likely get an A in AB since it would be kind of a step down for me.

And thanks everyone else for your input! I appreciate it

I think all of the schools on your list are matches! Im looking at some of the same schools for EE and BioE. Good Luck!
