31 to a 33/34?

Hi guys! So I recently took the ACT on June 11, 2016 and scored a 31.

Composite: 31
English: 31
Math: 29
Reading: 31
Science: 31

Is it possible for me to raise my score to a 33 or 34 in the September ACT test date? I am applying to Yale EA, so September would be the last date I can take it. I always struggle with Reading and Math (I usually score 33’s and 34’s on my math practice test, so I’m not quite sure what happened here). How can I raise my scores in so little time? ADVICE please!

Just do as much practice as possible. I’m assuming it’s careless mistakes and not content issues. I would just do individual sections at first until you feel comfortable in every section. (But you need to understand why you are missing questions and then develop your own strategies). Then do a few full length until you feel prepared and confident. With this method I’ve raised my score from a 32 to a 34 and I’m still working to get that 35. However, I’ve never had an issue with math, but I’m assuming this will still work.

Practice is definitely a good thing. I got a 36 last October using a Barron’s ACT prep book. I am applying to Harvard EA, and I wish you the best at Yale! The book I used had a breakdown of each section that was very helpful, especially since I had never taken such a long test before. Understanding why you miss practice questions is crucial. Careless mistakes can be fixed by reading carefully, checking your work, and maybe working a little slower. Lapses in knowledge can be filled in by the material in a review book of your choice.

Your mood on the day of the test is always very important. Whenever I have a big test I curl my hair, listen to loud music, wear my favorite jeans, and drink Mountain Dew. It sounds odd, but do something that will put you in a good mood right before, it helps a ton I promise! and here are some clichés for you: don’t panic, come back to anything you don’t know, and work as fast as you can without making careless mistakes.
