The University of Chicago and UChicago Medicine are part of a new health research accelerator that has launched thanks to nearly $35 million from the National Institutes of Health.
It’s enough to perhaps help arrest the decline. Not nearly enough to begin the climb up. That kind of move would require $200 - $500 M and dynamic new leadership. I hear Barack Obama is available.
ITM is part of a collaboration between UChicago Medicine, IIT, Rush, Advocate Health Care, Loyola, and NorthShore. I’d imagine only funding to NorthShore and UChicago Medicine actually counts as BSD funding so to answer your question: no, I don’t think this funding will be sufficient in improving the BSD. Also, ITM is essentially a giant core facility so I’m not sure it’ll actually count as research funding for individual faculty members.
