Do you think he'll test us on drawing specific molecules for nmr and stuff? (Like knowing how to draw a molecule if he gives us the name not by looking at the nmr chart I mean) Because I don't really remember how to draw like carboxyl, ethers, aldehydes and all that joyful stuff.

Also, anyone doing worksheet 2? It's only 6 pages right? and I'm a little sketch about the last question...I can't get the molecule to weight 114 =\ what am i doing wrong??? :(

it’s achiral so the resonance for each side are the same. the molecule is 4-heptanone (http://www.chemblink.com/structures/123-19-3.gif)

but yeah, what he said in lab lecture and 3a lecture seemed like the exam is going to be really random…did anyone take 3aL in the summer?

how many resonances did you expect in 4B A-E? (i feel like im over thinking it)

Isn’t it 3 for all except the last one which is 2? None of the others have planes of symmetry. At least that’s how I thought of it. What did you put? Also, 4C: did you get d and then a as the molecules?
For the last one, looking at the chem shift chart is throwing me off… one of the CH2 has to be one of the lines under 20 correct?

Lastly, for 1b, to draw the quintet, wouldn’t you have to assume the J values were equal?

for the lab exam should we go over all our labs from this semester and the principles behind them or just the three worksheets-im pretty sure he said just the latter in lab lecture but i wanted to check on here…

and i dont understand NMR-i am only just starting worsheet #2, lol-i suck :(

yeah i got the same thing for the resonances a-e (all 3 but e is 2)

wait how is chirality/achirality related to nmr? am i missing something?

if it’s achiral, then they should be in the same “environment” or something like that. If it’s chiral, then there would be more peaks. something like that…

yes

i dunno, i don’t have my wrkst on me anymore…

i don’t think the lab exam is going to be too hard as no one really understands NMR w/o a book/lab manual/**internet/B. The rest is basic stuff: recrystallization, acid/base, chromatography, phase diagram…i think we’ll be fine, pedersen doesn’t try to trick

lol, so who did your NMR worksheet #1?

jk :D

I’m thinking about going to office hours tmrw though…I have a class right after so I’ve never gone, is it helpful?

OH by the GSIs? Well they pretty much just sit there and you ask questions and they guide you to the answer. Only helpful if you’re unsure of things you want to clear up.

nah, most of the GSI’s blow. They leaned the concepts in a completely different way.

I was thinking about going to pedersens OH tmrw, is it any good? how many ppl usually go?

can anyone post a link that discusses chirality/achirality and NMR? did he go over that in lecture at all? its not there in the slides

well i guess you sort of use chirality to assign C13 resonances like on i think it was 4b.

i realize its kinda late now since i already turned it in but on #2, does it matter if we drew it as a quartet of doublets or as a doublet of quartets since they gave us the J values? i did a a quartet of doublets. i would think as long as i ended with eight peaks i should be fine, right? my lab mate did the opposite of me but also got 8 peaks…

oh and i too would like to know how many usually go to pedersons office hours-i kinda wanna go once but i dont want to be the only one there and feel foolish, lol.

i would love it if I were the only one there…

i just don’t want it to be another lecture with 100 ppl. I asked a friend and she said that his OH are useless, too many ppl, too little time…i doubt I’ll end up going

aww…i was hoping it would be more like 5-10 people

i dont get it. professors are always like: “no one comes to office hours…im always alone” but then somehow its hard to get face time when you go.

<shakes head=“”></shakes>

Knowing that Wednesday’s the final, I’m sure there’s gonna be more people there than usual. And that means more chances of dumb questions (sorry to be so direct).

i just calculated…and i need > 16 on the final to get an A in the class

so it’s pretty much like get an A or incomplete with a 6 point margin of error for a B

wait so pedersens OH are pretty full usually throughout the year? rougly how many people?
