4.0 at UNC

How hard is it? Know anyone who's done it?

The average GPA at UNC is 3.2 and I believe it is a few tenths of a point lower than “Work Forest”–notorious for grade deflation. It’s only going to get worse. There is strong institutional pressure to deflate grades even more. The faculty counsel recently approved a new academic transcript that will be more detailed and show class averages and how one compared against their peers in a class. Though this hasn’t been said officially, the new transcripts will probably lead to a “rationing” of A’s.

Yes, totally doable for a humanities major, but you’d be completely missing the point. It would require an enormous amount of nitpicking and honestly, I don’t think it’s worth it. Especially since they’re redoing the transcripts, the selection of easy classes would be a huge tell and it wouldn’t be all that impressive IMO. I’d just aim for a 3.75+ and take a variety of courses that will reflect well on your ability to handle new challenges.

If you have to sacrifice other stuff to get a 4.0, then you’re doing it wrong.

I know one girl with a double major and a 4.0 (she’s a rising senior)… however, study groups are pretty much her idea of “social gathering” haha. So, I agree with ArtemisDea… its possible… but really, really, really not worth it.

Can someone explain what these new transcripts will be like? I just got back from orientation and i chose stor 113 instead of math 232 to cover my calculus requirement for kenan-flagler… Im sure i would be ok in Calc 2 but the advisors recommended not to take it unless i was doing something math related which Im not… So… What Im asking is will this new transcript make me look lazy? Im planning on applying to very prestigious grad schools.

Thanks!

It will show the average letter grade in the class next to your letter grade in the class… and it will show a Schedule Point Average next to your GPA. The Schedule Point Average is the GPA of the class average in every class you take.

I read the title of this thread and laughed… (May 2011 grad here, ha ha)
