Hi,

Please chance me! I am currently a junior at a very competitive, public high school.

My cumulative GPA is a 4.1 weighted.

My top SAT score is a 1360 (new SAT): 700 Math, 660 EWR.

  • I am taking it one more time, so hopefully I could get it up.

My top ACT score is a composite of 31: 35 English, 28 Math, 33 Reading, 28 Science, 9 Writing.

  • If given the option, I will most likely use this score to send to colleges.

In-school extra-curriculars:
Eco club, Youth Alliance club, National Honor Society chapter, Future Physicians of America club (board member), Transitions Leader, French Honor Society, former Volleyball athlete (had to quit due to surgery)

Out-of-school extra-curriculars:

Over 200+ hours of volunteer in the past year.

My question is, what are my chances of getting into schools such as New York University and UMich? My school’s college resource site says that my chances are pretty good, but many students at my school apply to those colleges, so it is a very competitive atmosphere. I can’t tell if my grades or ACT are sufficient enough, and those are my dream schools.

If my scores/GPA/etc. aren’t good enough, what schools should I aim for? Also, generally speaking, what are my chances of getting into schools near those ranks (around #25 to #45 on US News)?

Although my ACT reading & English scores are pretty strong, my math and science scores are a bit low. I’ve always had some difficulty with math, but I am considering a major relating to biology (maybe neuroscience) with a pre-med track. How does this affect my admission into a competitive science school?

I would love to hear your opinions, personal experiences, etc. It helps a lot, since I’m unsure about what schools to consider with what I have so far. Thank you!

A 4.1 GPA can get you into tippy-top schools like Cornell, so you should be able to get into NYU or UMich… However, your UW GPA doesn’t look too hot… What is it? Around a 3.4-3.5?
Your ACT is much better than your SAT, and I think it’s right around average for those two schools, but don’t quote me on that. Do you have any leadership within your ECs or are you just there to fill a slot on the roster?
Also stop worrying about rankings… Don’t be that guy that applies to schools based solely on their US News ranking…

NM

You’ve got a good shot at NYU and UMich, since your going into A&S and not engineering. I believe both of those school super score so it would be worth taking the ACT again and not worrying about the SAT. Apply ED1/2 to NYU and EA to UMich if those are your top two, hopefully you’re from Michigan so you can get in state tuition.

My unweighted GPA is a 3.91.

Instead of looking at the rankings of schools, should I look into their rankings in the sciences? Basically, I just want to look into schools that have a good science or research department. Any suggestions?

scores are always evaluated in context - race, ethnicity, gender, family context, without that it’s kind of tough to evaluate your scores. I’m new to cc but I thought that the chances template had that info (hooks) for people to provide. Second, even if you’re going into neuroscience, you’ll need to improve the math and science score on your ACT or retake the SAT, I wouldn’t do both, but you should be in the 1450s for NYU and UM.

I think you should focus on the ACT rather than the SAT since your score is higher. Also how is your UW a 3.91?

Looks good, good chances. Too many Bs for a 3.91 UW. Do you have a way you could check your official gpa?

Yes, my school transcript says I have a 3.91 cumulative UW

What is your major, career goal, and home state?
