4 year overview

Do I need to take specific classes each term? Are there classes that every student has to take before they can graduate or is it just 12 credits/term minimum?

*Note: I'm planning to be a bio-major with a pre-med course. There are some electives i have in mind, but I'm not sure if i want any more than the required classes for my major and the pre-med track.

To graduate, you have to complete several different requirements.

 • Diversified Education Curriculum (aka, D.E.C.)
 • Major and Pre-Professional Requirements
 • Upper Division Requirements
 • Residency Requirements

There are various classes that you can take to complete DEC courses, but only WRT 102 will satisfy DEC A. Therefore, WRT 102 is the only course that all students at Stony Brook are required to take. Requirements to a Biology major are unclear to me, but I know that a lot of the requirements are set in stone, as in you have to take this one specific class and you don’t have a choice in it, until a certain point when you have to take upper division biology electives. I know that you’ll have to take General, Organic Chemistries, and all the basic Biology classes. The upper division requirement only requires that you complete 36 credits of upper division (300+ level) work, and the residency requirement states that you have to complete at least something like 30 credits at Stony Brook after you earn your 57th credit. Finally, you’ll need to take at least 15 credits/semester to graduate “on time,” or in 8 semesters (4 academic years).

There is the sample course sequence which you should follow to an extent(don’t have to) which is the only “specific” classes each term constraint I can think of.

[Stony Brook Undergraduate Bulletin - Fall*2010 - BIOSample Course Sequence](http://sb.cc.stonybrook.edu/bulletin/current/academicprograms/bio/sequence.php)
That sequence does complete all the requirements, but it’s not what you have to follow. It is recommended that you do because certain classes require other classes to be done before hand.(Like CHE 131 to do CHE 132 to do Organic/CHE 321) Of course theres room for swapping things around and taking extra classes(limit is 19 normally).
