4 Years of Science? Advice

I am choosing classes for senior year and would like to be competitive for Michigan. I have taken Physics, Chemistry and Biology Honors freshman through junior years. I would like to take AP Econ instead of a 4th year of science (ie either an AP Chem or AP Anatomy which I am not at all interested) or even Oceanaography or Meteorology just to get the fourth year of Science in.

Does Michigan require that you have four years of Science for admittance?

My senior year schedule will be:

AP Stats
AP Gov Pol
AP Econ
Honors English
Spanish 4

I would be applying to LSA for an Econ degree. Any input would be appreciated.

are you in-state or OOS? how has your GPA been? honestly, i’d say that’s a pretty rigorous schedule (which michigan values a lot)
LSA strongly recommends 3 years of science:

If I were you, I’d take AP Calc or something instead of stats but whatever (if you want to pursue further studies in Econ it’s good to take as many math classes as possible). As far as I know, you don’t need 4 years of science or social studies.

AP Stats won’t get you any real credits at the university. Neither will AP Econ honestly.

AP Calc could atleast test you out of classes.

Since its not AP Spanish you wont get credit. Only the placement tests during oreintation can do that. So Spanish isn’t a must.

Sucks you can’t take and AP Science course and AP Econ

I am taking AP Calc now as a junior. AP Stats is the next Math class to take as a senior. I don’t really care too much about getting credit I would rather take a class like AP Econ in high school and not take the credit and have an easier time when I take it again in college!

@ariana pretty rigorous schedule? its only 3 AP’s and 3 of the easier ones at that! obviously its not an easy schedule, but i wouldnt go so far as to say its “pretty rigorous”
i would take AP Physics (if available) or AP Chem if i were you

and drop gov to do that
(sorry on an ipod, can’t edit posts)

AP Gov gets you departmental SS credit which could help

thanks for the input. I don’t think I will take AP Physics since I took Physics freshman year and that would be a stretch to remember all that and the same with Chemistry. I took that sophomore year. I remember little of that so I don’t want to jump back into that senior year. If I stick with this schedule I will have taken a total of 6 APs and all honors. If Stat and Econ look to be blow off classes to Michigan that is too bad because they are pretty tough at my school. I guess I will just have to let the chips fall.

Thanks everyone.

BTW…how many APs is considered rigorous? What is average? There has to be a balance somewhere…

good question…

“AP Stats won’t get you any real credits at the university. Neither will AP Econ honestly.”

Umm…what? I received 4 credits for each of those AP exams (5s).

@chris, Don’t worry, Michigan doesn’t really view them as blow off classes. Stats can be harder than Calc is at some schools. I graduated HS with AP Calc, Stats, Econ, and Govt (exams that gave me credit), and took AP Chem/English/US History/some other ones that I don’t remember (was too lazy to take the actual exams). Got into Michigan without much difficulty.

Does your school not offer Calc BC?

yes it does I just don’t love calculus that much to take it…

now that i know that you haven’t taken BC… i suggest taking that.
and i think average (for higher achieving students anyway) is 2 or so AP’s, pretty good is 3 or 4 and very rigorous is 4 (if some hard ones) or more. just my opinion though

You have to do something more helpful in major preparing, for Eco, you should take both stat and calc!

The credit you get for stats at Michigan is not for the class that you need for calc

AP Macro and AP Micro each get you 2 departmental credits. You will still need to take Econ 101 and 102 (Macro and Micro at Umich)

I hate to say it but at some point do you have to look at what taking these APs (especially Calc BC) does to your GPA? Do schools like Michigan really dig deep at look at ALL your courses or do they knock you out because of your GPA before they get to that? I heard at my school getting an A in Calc BC is almost impossible…at least it would be for me…Something I think I need to consider. Somehow you have to balance out the tough classes with the GPA. I think schools look at GPA first and you can get eliminated quickly before they even look at your course schedule.
Any thoughts on that?

“AP Macro and AP Micro each get you 2 departmental credits. You will still need to take Econ 101 and 102 (Macro and Micro at Umich)”

Did they change their AP policy recently? I received 4 credits for AP Micro alone, and I didn’t need to take Econ 101 at UMich. That new policy sucks. :(

Do you have AP BIO at your school?
