"Educational Environment- Identified schools which fall into the 4th or 5th quintiles (300 points for applicants from 4th and 5th quintile schools); PHHS is not eligible"

UCSD Freshman Comprehensive Review Process (Dec 2004)

Can someone please explain this thoroughly? Are the 4th and 5th quintile schools the ones that have the highest API, or the lowest API? Thanks.

“A disadvantaged educational/ school environment indicates that the applicant attends a California high school that is among the 4th or 5th quintile of all California public high schools using the following academic indicators: high school completion rate, percentage of students enrolled in college preparation classes, percentage of students enrolled in Advanced Placement/ Honors courses, percentage of students admitted to the UC/ CSU, and percentage of students taking the SAT Reasoning Test or the American College Test (ACT).”

[UC San Diego Comprehensive Review Admission Process: Freshman Selection, Fall 2008](http://www.ucsd.edu/prospective-students/admissions/undergraduate-admissions/freshmen/process.html)

Here it says that the 4th and 5th quintiles are the lowest performing, but everywhere else I have read says the opposite… ? Does anyone have a link that shows the 4th and 5th quintile schools, or possibly know the API cutoff?

Whatever the terminology, the UC means the student attending the 40 % of high schools that are non-high performing (in other words, the lowest 40 %)
