<p>I think you should only submit an extra rec if it says something important about you that won’t be brought out elsewhere in your application. “He did a really good job while working for me this summer” would not qualify. Perhaps, “he came up with an idea that saved our company a million dollars.” I’d send that one.</p>
<p>5 definitely seems overkill.</p>
I asked a similar question at my American University interview; regarding providing the appropriate amount of rec letters, (without stepping over the line.) The Ad Com told me a story about an applicant who sent 19 RECOMMENDATION LETTERS…He wasn’t accepted… The AU Ad Com gave me advice to never submit +/- 2 rec letters of what is requested, but also to submit “enough” that [the applicant] was well endorsed in their application.
