I was wondering if someone could give me some more information on the 5 year bacherlors/masters programs in the SFS. How do you get into those? When do you apply? What requirements do you have to have finished? Does it require a more intensive course load the first two years?

There's some basic information that you can find on the SFS website, but it doesn't go into a whole lot of detail, as I well know.

I was accepted into the BSFS/MA Security Studies 5-year program a few weeks ago. You apply for the 5-years early in the spring semester of your junior year. The application is the same as it is for any other person applying to grad school at Georgetown, with the key exception that you don't have to take the GREs. Instead, the Dean's Office submits a letter that certifies that you have met all the requirements and they are willing to support your candidacy.

The requirements are pretty simple: you must have completed (or be on base to complete) the entire SFS core and at least half of your major. Now, given that this would mean you would only need a few more classes to graduate period, it does seem like this might require you to have taken a few extra classes along the way. In practice, it depends on AP credit, which language you're taking, if any, and how long you took it before you took the proficiency exam, as well as some other factors.

As these programs become more and more competitive, I would say that the most critical and most difficult factor isn't a more intensive course load, but rather getting professional or serious academic experience in your field. For the grad school to take you, they're probably going to have to pass up someone who at the very least has already graduated and probably has compiled a decent record of some combination of internships, jobs, papers, etc.

Do you know anything about the BSBA/MSFS program? Where you combine an undergrad business degree with a master's in foreign service.
