Hey guys, I'm applying to UCLA and UCB and I love both of the schools. However I've heard that as a result of the California budget crisis, UCs have been cutting back on their undergraduate classes and increasing class sizes. A lot of people have told me that it will now generally take 5 years to satisfy one's major requirements and graduate.

The problem is that I'm OOS and while my family could certainly afford 5 years OOS tuition, I wouldn't exactly be thrilled about having to pay the extra 50k.

no they would never make it so that you need to take 5 years to graduate
they actually want you to get out asap - 8 semesters and you actually have to petition or have some valid reason for 9th semester (ie double major)

unless you really really mess up on scheduling, which I think you can’t if you are smart enough to get into Cal, then there will be no problem
also, if you happen to fall behind or something, almost all major lower div classes are offered during summer as well

they actually won’t let you stay 5 years - i hope that answers your question

Really? Thanks for the input. I only heard about the 5 year graduation thing when I posted about it in the College Search and Selection section.

when you take summer classes, its considered in the “5 years to graduate” statistic. So while in actual time, it will be 4 years or maybe slightly more, it will be five years or more based on how many semesters you are taking classes.

The required courses are always offered every semester regardless of major. It just happens that the number of choices for the elective classes has slightly decreased, or merged with another department. There is no reason to not graduate within 8 semesters unless you repeatedly fail a course or changing your major a couple of times.
