Thanks, & understood. ! I’m glad to see the others are not too far off the chart.
“In some regards, ‘liberal arts college’ is kind of a marketing term”
Marketing implies a marketing agency or a rebranding. Neither are present here. The term dates to Ancient Rome.
Clark University self-reports as a “Doctoral/Research Universities–Intensive” despite being essentially a liberal arts college.
Here’s the rest of them, since there does seem to be at least some interest.
I didn’t look beyond #100 in the USNWR ranking, so that number is missing for a lot of schools towards the bottom of the list:

@merc81, the liberal arts may date back to Roman times, but liberal arts colleges definitely do not. More to the point, schools may decide what to call themselves (though granted, most stick to Carnegie classifications). However, note that both Dartmouth and W&M consider themselves a “liberal arts university”. Also, LACs may want to make the connection to the Roman term, but pretty much all of them teach far more than the old Roman liberal arts. Richmond calls itself a LAC despite having a b-school. Bryn Mawr calls itself a LAC despite having grad students. So I do consider it partially a marketing term.
I do find the classifications in USNWR pretty confusing at times, though if it’s based on institution self-reporting, I suppose the institutions in question have only themselves to blame for ending up in weird categories. For instance, what makes Trinity University a “regional university” instead of a LAC? They’ve got 2300 undergrads and 197 grad students. That latter number is exactly the same as for Wesleyan University, which has long occupied a spot in the top tier of LAC rankings. Looks like Trinity would probably fall just out your top 50 if it were classified as a LAC.
^ Trinity classifies itself in the “Masters Colleges and Universities” category. They scored an 88.5 which would have put them in the mid-40s on my list.
@rayrick @NickFlynn Trinity University did not classify itself in the regional category, Carnegie did. http://carnegieclassifications.iu.edu/
Schools are placed in USNWR categories (national, liberal arts, regional), based on Carnegie classifications of college and universities. However, some schools like Wesleyan, the University of Richmond, Bucknell, and Middlebury, which have professional or graduate programs in greater abundance than Trinity, petitioned to be ranked in the liberal arts category, because it is perceived as more prestigious. Trinity, however, shares many qualities of LACs and considers itself a LAC.
