Hey is anyone submitting an essay well over this word limit? If so how much over it and do you think it will hurt your chances?

Byerly and Northstarmom, we all could use your insight here!

Use good judgement. It's okay to go over a bit, but don't write a book. I think mine were about 700 words each.

cool....anyone else please!?

I have the same problem! I'm just worried that the Common App online might cut off the essay after a certain word count. Does anyone know anything about that?

They cut off after 6000 characters, but the 500 word limit is not reinforced.

Mine is 600 words, one page.

kpphy, just make sure you preview your app and make sure it all fits before sending it off online. Sometimes things can be cut off of the page.
The word limit really isn't enforced for most top schools that use the common app. it's not like they count each word and stop reading after 500. they don't have time for that. but don't write them a novel because they don't have time for that either.
