is it a big deal if you go a little bit over 500 words?

500 for a college essay? Or a school essay.

We had to write 500 for governor's schools apps...unfortunately no one told me that. So when I did my draft I wrote like 750, because that was the natural length of what I was saying. I managed to cut it down to 500 without changing many ideas, it took some creative thinking. Just go through each sentence and see whatever you can rephrase to say the same thing in less words. When the teacher who reviewed it read my edited version, she said it was good, so I don't think I lost anything. You can generally edit out a lot if you go through carefully, you may realize even full sentences are not necessary to convey your overall point. Just try and ask "Is this essential to what I am overall trying to say, and can I say it in less words?"
