529 College Saving Plans - qualified withdrawals

I'm trying to figure out which of DD's expenses we can pay with her 529.

--Tuition and fees (pretty obvious--but does that include university health insurance?)

--Room and board. She's a grad student at Yale, so there is no "standard" Yale housing amount. Graduate student apartments come in a variety of prices, but there aren't enough apartments for everyone who wants one so she ended up in off-campus housing. Her apartment costs less than the most expensive Yale grad school apartment, so I assume we can use 529 money for her total rent? And then for food--I assume the maximum allowed amount would be whatever the Yale meal plan is?

--Books and supplies. That seems pretty cut and dried.

What kind of record-keeping is required (for tax purposes)?

For everything you want to know about 529 plans go to [Savingforcollege.com - The internet guide to funding college and Section 529 college savings plans.](http://www.savingforcollege.com)

The message boards there are great.

That said, I believe all required expenses are eligible. For room and board, I think you should take the numbers on the Yale site for undergrads to be safe.

We keep our receipts but I have never heard of any type of audit, review or investigation. I don’t know who would be concerned that it is being done correctly.

Thanks a lot, Kevin!
