529 for a theater pre-college program?

Anyone use a kids 529 for pre-college programs? Wonder if you can for programs that are being paid to a college but not for credit.

BUSTI mentioned this in it’s FAQ section:

As a parent, can I use my 529 plan for payment on my student’s account?
While the Summer Theatre Institute has never used 529 plans for payment of the program, other BU high school programs have. The BU Office of Student Accounts (the office from which you will receive billing statements) recommends that parents contact their individual 529 plan organizations; some may not allow use of the 529 plan for high school college credit programs.

So I guess you should start with your 529 people first. Let us know which summer programs you guys are looking at (with this cold snap going on, I’d love to here about summer plans!).

Shacherry, BUSTI does give college credit, if that helps!

Thanks guys. I will call the 529 plan and ask this question.

Because of the feedback from all the BUSTI summer 2012 kids my son is excited to try and get in there for summer 2013.

He might be better suited for a 2 week program due to other commitments in the summer. But here in NJ he will still be in school when the the University of Minnesota and NCSA summer programs start.

Any suggestions on other short term programs? Also what are peoples thoughts on picking a program that a kid is considering for college? If my son wants to be in LA or NY for school would it be smarter to do the USC, UCLA or NYU pre-college programs?

I checked on using the 529 plan with the company and they said they will write a check but it’s up to us to check the IRS guidelines. Also, BUSTI credits count towards a BER in a liberal arts college, you just have to check the college of choice first.

I know this is an old thread, but has anyone paid for a precollege program that awards college credits with 529 funds?
