My son is 4th semester sophomore, he plans on studying abroad 1st semester of his junior yr but he would like to transfer to another school after his study abroad. Is it possible to transfer to a 4 yr LAC after 5 semesters?
Is it possible to study abroad as a "freelancer" so that the semester abroad isn't counted with the same weight?
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

You need to check college websites, most colleges will require that he spend two years on campus after transferring. Some schools don’t permit students with over 2 yrs of credit to apply, while others let them transfer but may limit the number of credits.

I don’t know anything about not counting a sem abroad at the same weight; he might want to consider transferring and then doing a summer abroad instead.

we’ve talked about that but he has a summer internship abroad lined up already, and it makes sense to stay and study for a semester, He’s also missed deadlines for a fall transfer anyway.

He should do the summer and fall abroad since he has those set up. While he’s there, he can conduct the research necessary to find out if his target colleges/universities do accept transfer students and under what conditions. Many places do accept transfers like him, but as mentioned above will limit the number of transferred credits that can be applied toward graduation. It is most likely that he will be expected to complete the equivalent of four full semesters in residence at the new institution.
