Hoo29:
"I got in today. What are the advantages of UW-madison, how friendly are the people, and how generous are they with financial aid??"

I chose wisconsin because of the people, and a lot of east coasters did the same. I'm from TN, and I found the people to be most like those down south: friendly, welcoming, helpful. It was a big factor in choosing to come here over, say, Univ. of Vermont.
A lot of East Coasters did the same. They come saying that everybody back home is so mean, and you can't say anything without screaming. They say that here, it's more pleasant.
My roommate is from DC
(as he -never!- fails to remind people, always bragging as if it makes up for his ugliness. Girls dig it though. Freshmen girls fall for -anything- even if they guy is so no physically attractive. If I wanted to, I could eat grits and say 'yall' all day and I'd have some chick in my bed every weekend)
anyways...
My roommate is from DC, and he agrees that the people on the east coast do have an attitude and Madison people have so friendly in comparison.

So it's true, midwesterners are friendly people!

BTW:

Prospectives often worry/complain about being taught by a TA vs. a professor, as if TA's are inept, incapable, and second-rate as compared to the profs, as if TA are second-rate as compared to the prospective himself...

First, I'd like to say that you'll have good profs and bad profs. Some can't speak English, some sound like they're about to fall asleep even though they're wide awake. Some are even condescending. Some are even too wrapped up in their own research to care about the class.

However, all of the above situations are more likely to be found in professors than TAs. Remember, TAs are grad students who have been through where you as a freshman stand, 4x over! Furthermore, they're still trying to make a name for themselves, so they're not likely to take their position passively. They want to do well, and they want to impress the professors.

So far, my best teachers so far have been TAs. My zoology lab has 2 TAs for a class of about 25, and one was great, the other superb. I would gladly take either over again, as they were 100% approachable, down to earth, and both went out of their way to make sure things were well understood. Yes, one was foreign with an accent, but he was the best! No doubt about it, I'd choose both of these over a professor any day of the week.

My other TA is for intro math. My experience: very approachable, sense of humor, and went out of his way to help students outside of class, even buying us snacks for a Sunday night study session before exams! You think a professor would be this approachable, friendly, generous? Some, but hardly comparable to the TAs available. Oh, and he was foreign too, from China, with a slight accent. Problem? Nope, definitely a cool guy. Sorry if you're racist/elitist/too arrogant for your own good to believe those of foreign descent can't teach. They're great!

TAs are like you friends watching over you. Somehow, you understand something better when a peer shows you, as opposed to listening to a preacher.
People think TA's are a bad thing, but I wish more classes had them!

nice job! I got in too. They got processed my app, made a decision, and got back to me within a week. I was really impressed. Is that normal for them?

Wow..everyones already sent their applications! Im only going to send two weeks from now...should I be worried?

Uhh...If you get your app. out soon you will hear back before X-mas! I don't think it will matter though.

And Justplayin-thanks! I'll definetely put on my southern drawl at Wisconsin=)

since i'm from out of state and from the east coast, i've heard a lot of things about dorming in the private residence halls. However, i've heard that they tend to be more jappy and stuff like that. The question is whether i should dorm in the university residence halls or the more jappy, nicer private halls. Can anyone give me some input. And also, what univerisity residence halls are the nicest? Thanks

JAP=Jewish American Princess, right?

haha yeah, just really high maintenance and whatnot... the richer kids from out of state live there, and i want to know how other kids see them

swami, do you know if there is a big indian/paki/desi group in wisconsin-madison?
it doesn't seem too diverse, which is bad.
