622 words too long for 500 word common app essay?

I have a 622 essay that I think is the best essay that it can be right now. But is it too long for the common app. On the FAQ is said that they dont count word length, but is this essay way too long?

Mine was 638, I haven't been rejected from any of me EAs yet, though they are safeties.

nope. it doesn't matter as long as it's not ridiculously long and fit in one page.

Cornell policy is; as long as it aint 10 pages, and that you have a few hundred words WORTH going over for... then by all means write.
I've heard from people that almost any essay can be shortened down to 500 words or less. However, that's simply not true. For some events you cannot do justice to yourself or your writing if you don't finish well.
However, what's true most of the time is that, most of the essays ARE too long and rambling.
Finish well but don't ramble.

I wrote an essay of almost exactly the same length for Harvard EA and was accepted. It's okay, but make sure that your writing is very good.

Would any of you care to read over my essay?

I'll do it
send it over to me using e-mail,
ml8878@yahoo.com,
I'll use track changes and send it back.

That's good to hear. I've got about 592 words and cutting it down is destroying it.

what about 800???

800...or 400...don't worry about how long it is, but rather the quality of the writing. 400 words of horrible writing may feel like 800 words if its boring. 800 words of flowing, interesting writing may seem like 400 words. Just do whatever you can to take out superfluous sentences / words. Reread it and see if it still holds its spizzazz.

800 is probably a little too long. They can tell when you go over and for most writers in this age group they are probably rambling or being wordy. Almost all shorter answer questions can be cut down. 622 is fine.

It basially depends on how good your essay is. If your essay is good enough that they actually want to read on, then by all means....an extra 100 words takes less than 20 seconds to read after all.

Mine was 831 and I got accepted.
