75 and sunny today in ojai!

Thacher is surrounded by orange groves. Please remind me why everyone wants to spend the winter in New England?

I actually like the weather around here.

The joke around here (not really a joke) is if you don’t like the weather here, move back to where you came from.

When I first started applying my first choices were Cate and Thacher, but my parents were hugely against me moving across the US. Thanks for tempting me all over again, catg. :P

There was never any doubt that my son was going to go to a New England boarding school. We live in D.C. Why in the world would he / we ever consider going across the U.S. when there are SO MANY awesome opportunities on the East Coast??? Then…you visit Thacher (or Cate, for that matter - but I’m a Thacher guy) and you finally get it. It’s not like any other boarding school. While it may not be right for every kid, unless you see it for yourself, you can’t begin to appreciate its advantages. I mean, how many schools can you be heading out after classes on your horse with a bunch of friends to go trail riding, grab a couple of oranges off one of the trees as you go by for a snack.

If more people knew about Cate and Thacher, they would have the lowest admit rates of any prep schools in the U.S.

So true! A lot of folks on this site are cocksure that HADES+ is the holy grail of high-end boarding school education. Let them think the world is flat. Heh heh.

Ojai is the best place on earth (don’t tell anyone else). I’m a native Ojaian now living in NJ. What a surprise to see Ojai in print here.
It is nice to see people from the east coast appreciate the appeal of Ojai but I could certainly see a culture shock for many east coast kids. I was just a public “townie” but had friends at both Thatcher and Cate, great schools.

What about natural disasters? They don’t happen that often, right? (My parents are not in favor of my applying to places in California but I really want to be somewhere warm, though New England climate is way milder than that of the place I currently reside.)

Never a problem in my 20 years there. The most prevalent would be forest fires swept by desert winds from the east (Santa Ana’s). There is always early warning and they don’t happen too often.
There are no hurricanes, tornados, lightning storms, nor’easters, etc.
Of all the concerns, your personal safety due to natural disasters should not be one of them, IMHO

braincramp, how beautiful is that valley just over the hills from ojai? what is the name of it?

Loving this thread as this is one of the schools that my daughter has applied to.

I love Cate and Thacher anytime of year, but as I look outside my windows at the deep snow, I’m wishing Cate had a parents’ weekend scheduled this weekend!

CP

This is making me regret not trying to convince my parents more. Do Cate and Thacher have rolling admission?

think about this when your ne bs grad says no to any college with bad winters

aww good ol’ thatcher

i know some thatchers here in berkeley

Thacher does not have rolling admission. Sorry!!! Maybe next year?

I wish I could’ve applied. We live very near DC (Loving the snow days recently!) and my parents won’t let me go across the nation when we have perfectly good schools on this coast.

To my knowledge Cate doesn’t have rolling admission either. However, I would encourage you to contact the admission office to learn more.

Thanks, ThacherParent and Old School! I’ve looked around on the sites and am thinking of calling the schools.

…Orange groves…horseback riding…why did I not apply…

Tuesdays: Hey, actually I’m trying to apply (LATE) for Cate and Thacher too. I don’t know about Thacher but the lady who is helping me for admissions for Cate said that I’d be considered in the second round of admissions. Well, she also said most of the acceptances are from the first round, but hey, you still can try, right?
