7th Grade Admission

It may be early for this board, but My 6th grade cousin is looking for 7th grade admission to some ISL schools like Belmont Hill, Rivers, Nobles, BBN, plus some junior schools like Fessenden. ISEE scores are 95th QR, low 90s Math, mid 70 vocab, mid 60 reading. He is all A with some A+ in school, lots of sports teams like football soccer etc, plus a boy scout. How are his chances? Any concerns?

i think he should just wait until 8th grade. He’ll have longer to get better ec’s and impress teachers. There’s no point in hurrying the process!

Hi, the problem is that if he waits until 8th to apply for 9th, the acceptance rates are much lower, and his scores I hear have to be much higher for some of these schools

i still think 8th grade would be better. but it’s his choice, if he doesn’t get in he can always apply next year!

He would probably be better off applying for 7th, not 9th there are probably better acceptance rates

Take a look at Eaglebrook School (Deerfield, MA) [Please wait…](http://www.eaglebrook.org)
… Its a junior-high starting 6th grade 'til 9th grade.

please wait = [Please wait…](http://www.eaglebrook.org)

Now that applications are filed, any suggestions to increase admission chances? Do folks continue to try to talk with people at the school, alums, etc.?

Eaglebrook works on rolling admissions.

As far as the day schools you list–BBN, Rivers, Nobles, Ithink they are easier to get into the younger you apply.

I think he should At least wait till he is in 7th grade.

My sense is that is this a 6th grader, looking into 7th grade?

Many students in our area transfer into private schools at 7th grade. Many of the schools are day schools, so the student would still be living at home

A lot of the public elementary schools go until 6th grade with middle school going 6-8 so 7th grade is a more competitive year for the Jr. Preps than 6th.

I agree with MomofaKnight. Whether applying to an ISL or a competitive parochial school it often easier to get in at grade 7 than 9.

To answer the question: Now that applications are filed, any suggestions to increase admission chances? Do folks continue to try to talk with people at the school, alums, etc.?

Contact each admission office and verify that application is complete.

If the applicant has special ability in athletics or the arts then contact with the coach or orchestra director etc can have a big impact on admissions at some schools
Like college, prep coaches often give "lists’ to admissions of kids that would like to see admitted.

Thanks. Just to clarify, he has already applied for 7th grade next year from 6th grade this year. I’m really looking for opinions on two questions: (1) given his basic info above, what are his chances for acceptance into these ISLs given that he has applied, and (2) are there any suggestions to increase his acceptance chances given that he has applied, such as speaking with alums, school officials, etc? Thanks
