@HoloTheWisewolf About 95% of people attending mop this year are asian.
@Ellemay0 I think the number is more around 85%, but w/e. The point I was making is that MOP is as close to a guarantee for top schools as most people will get.
Yes. But to paraphrase Bette Davis: “But you **aren’**t Blanche. You aren’t a female African-American.”
Reaches - MIT, Columbia, Cornell
Matches - RPI, Cornell, Berkeley
Did you really ask why do you think your chances at Stanford are low? The acceptance rate says it all. I half suspect you are trying to rile people up with this post, but I will go along with it. You know your list is 100% prestige driven. You know there are plenty of top 50 colleges with renowned business and STEM programs. As for post #43, Cornell and Berkeley are reaches for all.
I think you should definitely only apply to those eleven schools you listed. As long as you like UTA you are all set. You have no hook. There are other kids like you, and perhaps this story from a year ago will give you some insight. http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/college-admissions/1891200-asian-rejected-from-everywhere-postmortem-p1.html
P.S. It’s Ivies.
No, @OG, I think you have a very strong shot at Stanford and MIT. Just elaborate on why math means a lot to you, and elaborate on your other activities. The fact that you missed MOSP by 1 point is unfortunate, but don’t try to mention that in your application, or they may think that you are making excuses.
Anyhow, you are in a great position, and with a great essay you will make it.
@Lindagaf I meant relative to the other schools he chanced me at.
You should definitely try Stanford and MIT. I would also add that you should take a hard look at CMU. My recommendation would be to work very hard on your essays - make sure they know “who” you are.
“@thelonliestmonk Stanford and Harvard are my dream schools followed by MIT and Wharton. Why do you think my chances for Stanford are low?”
As an Asian male, you’re in the toughest demographic to get in, everybody else applying will have similar if not better accomplishments than you. So after you take out athletes, legacies, first gen students, URMs, the actual acceptance rate for folks without any hook is 1-2%. Asian males are even in a tougher group, especially for STEM, so you have to think it’s more around 1%, maybe even less. If it’s your dream school, apply, your unique factor would be the business you started. Then you can’t apply early anywhere else except a public university. I would apply regular decision to MIT, Wharton, Berkeley, Cal Tech, maybe Cornell as those schools don’t give as much an advantage to the hooks I mentioned.
Remember, you don’t declare your major in a Stanford application - you decide later. Key for you will be be your essays. Invest in your essays…
Why does your college list resemble the US news rankings? Applying to all the ivies, Stanford and MIT is too much and frankly ridiculous - ask pretty much anyone on this website. There is no way someone would be equally happy at all the ivies. Would you prefer an urban or rural campus? A strong core curriculum or an open curriculum? Is an undergraduate focus important to you? What about Greek life?
Elite schools aren’t ‘one size fits all’. Each college has its own individual personality and the majority of them have you write an essay about that.
As for your chances, I would say pretty low. Your application is pretty generic (especially for an Asian) and nothing stands out. Apply to 3 or 4 reaches (which is any school with a less than 15% acceptance rate) but focus your energy on matches (schools with around a 20-30% acceptance rate).
