Yup, I have a 922 word essay. I plan on sending this (in one form or another) to NYU Gallatin. But alas, I would like to try to trim it down. Only problem is, I see nothing to cut. Can anyone provide some assistance, perhaps?

Please help me if you can Bump!

If the word limit is 500, then you have a HUGE problem. Hundreds of thousands of other high school students can write within the word limit. If the word limit if 750, then just try to trim out fluff, like descriptions and stuff. Of course, I’m doing college apps too, so I’m not helpful in any way haha. Good luck though!! :)

I know I have a problem and I know I need to trim it…

Trimming it is what I am seeking help with.

Maybe you could share an outline of your essay with us along with the word counts for each section?

Generally I would advise that the nice part about trimming is that you can cut anything that isn’t absolutely essential, which should leave you with your best material.

Here’s a great instructional article on how to break down the structure of example essays, maybe it can be applied to help you determine what to cut?

Best of luck!

its not really an essay that can be outlined, haha. perhaps someone would want to review it?

um… bump…

There is a 500 word because the colleges know that you can obviously write more than that, however, they want to see if you get your essay down to 500 words. It’s not as easy as it seems! lol

This is a test of whether you can be honest with yourself. You know, in your heart, that you can cut this essay down to 500 words. Indeed, you already know what you probably need to cut.

I’ll be the first to admit I can cut it to maybe 750.

I don’t know how you can be so sure that it can get down to 500. You havent even seen it!

try cutting out some of the extra “fluff” or if you have too much description, cut some of that (but make sure your essay doesn’t lose meaning). Find more concise ways to say certain things. I tend to be a lengthy writer and I find that when I go back and review my essay myself (or have someone else look at it), I can easily shorten some of my sentences etc.

i can edit it for you if you feel like pming it to me
what’s the word limit?

the word limit is 500 words

Maybe, if your essay is “not really an essay that can be outlined,” the underlying problem is that it is not as organized as it could be. You don’t need to do this for the readers on CC, but it might be helpful to do it for your own benefit. If you can’t outline it, can you at least make a list of the main ideas of each paragraph?

I am an adult who has written a little for publication, and I know how hard it is to cut words. My thoughts are, “These words are my babies! I gave birth to them! I love them all equally, and I can’t give up a single one!” It has helped me to save my work, make a new document, and realize that I’m giving up words only for this article–they aren’t gone forever.

Usually after I do that, I realize that the new version is actually the better one.

it’s a creative piece about the inner mechanisms of my mind during a “diffficult” time haha if that helps. I can PM it :)
