A 30,000 app question

I pondered about how college admissions work last night. No, not how you should do to get

in like google suggested, but how does an admissions committee get through all those

applications to pick out the 1300 or whatever the number. I thought and thought and still

could not figure it out. Do they read/sort through each one by alphabetical order? By SAT

scores? By grades? By regions? By race? Or by economic status? Do they read through all

applications before choosing and debating? Or is that done one by one? What happens

when the 1300 number is reached and there still are applications not yet read?

Anyone with some insights?

just found a New Yorker article on how college admissions at top schools have become 'a casino on Mars."

[The Thin Envelope : The New Yorker](http://www.newyorker.com/archive/2003/04/07/030407crat_atlarge)

Not going to bother put it in nice little words, you all can just click the actual link. It’s a good article if you wanna know some of the answers to some of my questions.

You might want to read “The Gatekeepers: Inside the Admissions Process of a Premier College” by Jacques Steinberg. Excellent book all about the admissions process one year at Wesleyan.

SOMEDAY (if i get accepted) I will investigate about how the univ select the applicants! the same day i will post it here!

I second fireandrain’s suggestion of The Gatekeepers. I thoroughly enjoyed getting an inside glimpse of the admissions process.

that book was referenced in the link

Read “A is for Admission”

It’s by a former Dartmouth admission officer and gives the low-down on the formula they used to rank applicants.

Yes, I highly recommend “A is for Admission,” along with Michelle Hernandez’s other book “Acing the College Application.” (that is, if you haven’t applied yet)

Not all schools use the AI, every school has its own admissions practices.
