Hi, I was wondering if there was a biochemistry majory, or anything similar to it in JHU undergrad. And what exactly is Bio Medical Engineering? Why such special treatment?

Thankyou!

Hi, I was wondering if there was a biochemistry majory, or anything similar to it in JHU undergrad. And what exactly is Bio Medical Engineering? Why such special treatment?

Thankyou!

There is a biochemistry concentration within the Biology major.

Biomedical engineering is the application of engineering principles to medical fields.

There is also the Chemical & Biomolecular major. Basically if there isn't one named "Biochemistry" it's there. It's just the same thing different name.

Thanks alot guys. That really helped clear things up a bit. One more question:
Isn't engineering math concentrated? I'm not saying I don't want to have anything to do with math but.. another four years of straight up calculus + ??
haha I wish they'd just make it easier and name it "Biochemistry"

Well as with any engineering there is a lot of math. Calc I, II, III probably Lin Alg and Diff Eq. and maybe more. If you want to avoid all the math you can major in Biology and take a lot of Biochem courses and basically make the same biochemistry major or major in chemistry and take a lot of biochemistry courses. (I'm sure there are biochem concentrations within both majors!) But engineering is where it's at man ;)

haha thanks for the response.
I heard engineers make a lot of $.. but Math for the rest of my life??
;oaweigjoiewga I think ill stop at calc.
Thanks again!

so there is no "biochemistry" field in johns hopkins right?

There is no biochem major probably. But there is research and classes. And probably some of the world's best research in the topic... this is Hopkins after all, bio and chem is what they do.

hi im currently a chemical and biomolecular engineering (ChemBE) major at hopkins. as far as maths go we just have to take calc 1, 2, 3 and differential equations. im in my third semester and this is the last time ill have to take a math course for my major (but some people i know finished with their maths even sooner) so its not that many math courses but there is a lot of math in my engineering classes. even still, its a very rewarding major that opens up so many doors. u should really consider it. to answer ur other question no there is no biochemistry major but u can definitely do research as an undergrad in biochem labs on campus. also like other ppl have already said u can major is biology or anyting really and just take a lot of biochem courses. my concentration is in molecular and cellular bioengineering so im really interested in that sort of thing and the classes ive taken so far relating to biochem are fascinating i hope this helps!!
