A cappella (or other music stuff) at Yale?

I feel like I've heard a lot about a cappella at Yale over the years and was wondering if it was a big thing there.
Also, are all the groups super selective? I've done a cappella for about 3 years and have been involved in voice for a really long time (vocal jazz, choir, theater etc.) but I'm not insanely talented or anything.

A cappella is a huge thing at Yale! We have at least 19 groups (possibly more), and a cappella is almost a way of life. Lots of social interaction centers around the groups, and they are a great way to meet people, learn music, and have tons of fun!

The different groups differ in degrees of selectivity, but since there are so many of them, chances are that if you are a reasonably good singer (which it sounds like you are, based on what you said in your post) you’ll be able to find a group to sing with.

And to add to my above post, the groups are very diverse. Some are all-male, some all-female, some coed. There’s a Christian a cappella group, there’s one that has very African-American roots, there are some whose shows are one part singing and one part stand-up comedy. All in all, lots of fun.

You might be able to glean some information from this website, though it needs to be updated:

One of the reasons that my son selected Yale was because of the a cappella groups! Before Bulldog Days, he was sure that he wanted to sing with Alley Cats, but after hearing some of the other a cappella groups, he now has a list of five possible groups. :)
