A+ college for a B student with decent SAT

Hey convolver, Alfred University is a really great school that is moderately priced for a private institution plus gives amazing merit aid. It offers engineering and strong arts programs along with great liberal arts majors with great student-to-faculty ratios that you’d experience at an LAC. My cousin graduated as an English major and got a job with Teach for America immediately. It is in a pretty seculed location, though, you may want to consider that.

SUNY Buffalo, SUNY Albany, SUNY New Paltz would all be great matches/safeties and Bing would be a nice reach.

<<<<<<<<<<<<<
I like SUNY buffalo, new paltz, and albany but don’t know much about any besides Buffalo. I also like Ithaca but I do not know if I can get in. I have also thought about Alfred, Plattsburgh as a safety, and CUNY Baruch. If you think those are some nice choices just let me know.

Ok with the above suggestions, which would be your top choices?

Have you visited any of them?

My top choices would be Buffalo, Ithaca, and I’d like to add Quinnipiac and CUNY Hunter on there too. I’ve only visited Buffalo and Bing but I doubt I can get into Bing. ( Just for NY schools)

Out of state i’ve taken interest in Towson, UNH, JMU, FSU, and Auburn.

I’m not sure my chances at New Paltz, my friend goes there so i’ve taken some interest in that too

FYI…

Since your stats aren’t high enough, you won’t get any merit $$ from Auburn. The OOS COA for Auburn is $33k, so that wouldn’t be a good choice. Similarly for FSU. UNH may be the same problem.

While these are good schools, they aren’t worth such debt if going there meant taking out a bunch of loans. You have less expensive options in your own state.

Do you mind naming a few or have they already been discussed in this thread? And ones you think I can get into, not just good NY state schools.

[Welcome to Monmouth University](http://www.monmouth.edu/)
Check out Monmouth university in NJ , Beautiful campus and not too expensive. I know someone with your stats that got some merit aid too.

I know this is further away for you, but if you are interested in a small college, Mount Union in Alliance Ohio might be a match. Their football team is always the winner of DIII-if you like fb, but more importantly, it draws a ton of money into the school. They give a lot of money in aid. The kids that go there seem to like it. The average ACT is 22, which is a little lower than where you are, but check it out! Otherwise…There is nothing wrong with a good state university…It is all what you make it.

^^^

Monmouth U is inexpensive for a private U. However, even “inexpensive” may still result in the OP having to borrow a lot more than what is necessary. He could get a good education at a public in NY for less money. But, he could still apply and see what they offer him. :)

My concern for the OP is that he says that he needs to take out loans. That suggest that he knows that his family’s income is too high for FA, but they can’t help much with his college costs. If that thinking is wrong, I wish the OP would say so, because then we’d have better suggestions for him.

OP…what can your parents pay? Is their income highish? Would you likely qualify for F/A?

I agree with “mom”–avoid heavy debt. You would be foolish to take it on–and you don’t need to.

I just said loans because I figured I would need extra money after financial aid, I have no idea how it actually works. My combined income is probably about 100k, I’m not sure because my dad said he just got a cut from his salary and my mom only works part-time. Sorry for the misunderstanding.

I’m more-so worried about which colleges I can get into first. I know I have a few schools where I have a good chance of acceptance that I can pay for, so I want to see if my scores can get me into a good college.

any other suggestions?

University of Toledo.
gives lots of money.
easy to get in
well respected in Ohio

heavy, heavy workload.

Take a look at Sussquehanna, Elizabethtown, Moravian, Lycoming and St Josephs

*
SAT:
Math:580
Verbal:580
Writing:540
Total:1700, or 1160/1600

NY state

Ok…well it may seem that that should be your first concern, but it’s not. :)

Getting in is only half your real concern. There’s no point in spinning your wheels to find schools that will accept you only to find out in the spring that their financial packages are awful and unaffordable. There won’t be a “do-over” at that point. You won’t be able to turn the clock back to November and apply to schools that will be affordable.

So…you need to apply to a couple of inexpensive in-state schools - perhaps even one that you could commute to if necessary for financial reasons - if necessary. Which SUNYs do you like?

Someone has suggested the University of Toledo. That’s a state school. It doesn’t look like it gives much (if anything ) to OOS students. The OP lives in NY. Toledo also requires FAFSA submittals for their scholarship awards
