Any help would be great!! (I would visit the campus but $.... yeah....)

Well, I'm a freshman at ND, so I've only been here a few weeks, but I'll try to answer some of your questions.

How big of a deal is being Catholic at Notre Dame?
There are a LOT of Catholics here, but I have already met many people who aren't Catholic, and it doesn't seem like a problem for them at all. There are opportunitites out there for hardcore Catholics and Sunday-morning-only Catholics to practice their faith, and no pressure on those who aren't Catholic, or are Catholic, but haven't seen the inside of a church in years. There are also clubs for protestants, jews, and muslims on campus- although they are definitely in the minority.

What is the Japanese Major like?
Sorry- I have no idea.

Same question about engineering
I have heard its very good, but I can't tell you any more than that.

Can I double major in Japanese and engineering?
It might be kind of crazy, but you probably could if you planned things well enough. I'm planning on majoring in biochemistry, minoring in Chinese, and completing the Honors Program (essentially another minor)- so I'm guessing you could work it out.

How big of a deal is the whole jock scene?
A lot of people play sports, but I have met many people who are as unathletic as I am, so I wouldn't worry about that aspect of it. In terms of varsity athletes, the university seems to do a good job of integrating them into the student body and not placing them above everyone else. This does not, however, stop the entire female student body from worshipping Brady Quinn.

What's the weather like in the winter?
Hmm, from my Minnesotan perspective, it doesn't sound bad. Cold temperatures, but not bitter cold (20s and 30s according to the list of averages) and lots of snow (yay!). But it may be a shock for you coming from New Mexico.

In the summer?
Well, for the first couple weeks, it was a bit warm in my unairconditioned dorm, but now it isn't so bad.

I don't have too much to add other than the winter description sounds accurate to me, though I don't know if I would say lots of snow (then again I am from Denver, so it depends on your perspective). We don't get all that many snows but we do get them often, and many times we will have snow on the ground pretty much all winter. That differs from Denver where you can get huge snows, but it will melt off in a few days!

Aww, I want snow...Minnesota winters have been dissapointing the past few years. We've only gotten a few big snowstorms and no snow days. And the temperatures would get too warm and so the snow would melt and then they would slip below zero for awhile and it'd be too cold to snow.

oh i wish i came from a place with no snow. It snows and snows and snows here(western PA) all winter and spring long. But atleast its better than Rochester :)
