Because Lehigh is definitely not very diverse, would you say that kids at Lehigh are racist?

Also, with a 32 ACT, 3.5 UWGPA would I be able to get much money from Lehigh? Could I get into their IBE program somehow?

i can't speak for the overall student body at lehigh, but when i was there for governor's school, a couple of the mentors were lehigh students/grads, and they definitely were not racist in any way.

I don't really get the premise. A school can also lack diversity because admissable members of particular groups are too insecure and/or have too great a desire to be coddled, patronized and celebrated for their skin tone to attend. The school pays lip service to diversity because it is au courant in academia, but the school is not awash in identity politics the way many others are. It's safe to say that 99.999% of of Lehigh students could not care less what race or ethnicity someone is and being a minority has ZERO bearing on whether or not someone is embraced and accepted. Individuals have to decide for themselves if that is enough or if they need to go somewhere that enables a daily dose of racial awareness and victimology.

That's a ridiculous question. Hawaii is known as one of the most racist places on the planet, the caste system is well ensconced. And there's tons of diversity there in the population.

Of course there are racist people at Lehigh ... and every other school. If you recognize the difference, then you qualify. Only a matter of degrees.

i think it's a very valid concern she has, and very understandable...
however, viva la dana, why not forget about the racism and try to break the ice and introduce a new mindset to those who haven't been exposed to diversity? think of it as a challenge.

If you think it is a valid concern then why expound on that statement by offering vapid PC platitudes? What exactly does "exposed to diversity" mean anyway? Growing up in New Jersey Italians seemed a lot more 'foreign' to me than Asians, for instance.

AmenMr.Hawk. I'm betting there's scads of diversity at Lehigh. It just may not be in skin color or homeland of my grandparents. I have to laugh when I see people who might say, "I'm Asian and from Wisconsin" and then we're supposed to perceive that if he/she goes to Lehigh, well chalk one up for "diversity." And of course that's precisely how that aspect gets measured. Just look at The Princeton Review or any of the other guiding lights on this.

And of course it's a valid concern. Anywhere she might go. But the question remains silly and unanswerable ... except in PC platitudes.

Hey viva la dana, I'm African American and I applied to lehigh early decision and I am thrilled to be attending in the fall of 2008! Quite honestly I've lived in predominantly white areas my whole life so I'm accustomed to just opening up no matter what ethnic group may be present. But then again, its what your acusstomed to. If your someone who is use to hanging around people who share the same customs and ethnicities you are (I'm assuming your not white) then probably Lehigh might be somewhat of a culture shock. I definately applaud MrmountainHawk and x0angelwings39, just because a school lacks diversity doesn't necessarily mean that the people who attend are racist, its a matter of that particular group of people not wanting to attend. And to those who are racist, think of it as a challenge "breaking the ice" like x0angelwings39 said. But I must say, I've visited Lehigh on numerous of occasions and quite honestly the people I have come in contact with are so inviting and warm.

To be honest, I grew up in that kind of environment too. I think at least 90% of my friends are white. I mean I have no problem with that..if I did I wouldn't have applied to Lehigh. I love Lehigh believe me.

I was just reading through the student review thing that site whatever it's called and like there were so many horrible remarks about the kids. Maybe I'm thinking of another school?

Yes, I realize that anywhere I go, it will be a problem. I actually applied to schools that were at least 70% white because I'm used to that it's just like you know after reading stuff about it, it kinda makes you a little intimidated?

I know I'm going to be told DONT LISTEN TO THOSE SITES. I guess I won't.

Sorry if I offended or anything I really didn't mean to. I LOVE love love lehigh.

Oh no, I'm not offended at all, I definately see where you're coming from. There were times when I also second guessed myself as well, those sites do tend to be a little scarey. But after visiting and staying a night I got to see that yeah there might be those few who are a little stand offish but there are aslo TONS of people who are so open and willing to make conversaion. I hope the best for you and maybe I'll see you at lehigh?!

Lehigh seems to be making a concerted effort to attract more minorities to campus so it can toss aside the self-perpetuating "white, upper-middle class" reputation that it has had for decades. If minorities and FA students don't help the university by attending, nothing will change. Don't attend, however, just because you feel you should. Attend because you love Lehigh.

My guess would be that Lehigh students in general are not racist. The bigger question is whether you will feel comfortable in a predominantly white culture. If you come from a school that has a significant number of your own ethnic group, you might have a tougher time adjusting to Lehigh than another minority student who is used to being a minority. The problem then rests not with racism but with comfort.
